AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 21 Amherst College men's squash team earned a 9-0 sweep over Brandeis University in the 2016-17 season opener for the Purple & White Saturday afternoon at the Davenport Squash Courts.
With the win, Amherst begins its campaign 1-0, while Brandeis falls to 1-5 overall. The Purple & White return to action in 2017 when they host Middlebury College at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Davenport Squash Courts.
Amherst won all nine matches by virtue of 3-0 sweeps. Michael Groot '17 earned an 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 win from the first position, while David Merkel '19 won 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 in position two. Darian Ehsani '17 posted an 11-7, 11-1, 11-4 victory from the third court, while Lucas Sheiner '19 added an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 win from the fourth court.
Newcomers Mateen Mills '20, Christopher Zimmerman '20 and Mitch Ford picked up wins on the fifth, sixth and seventh courts respectively, while Ian Petty '19 earned an 11-0, 11-2, 11-3 win on court eight. Cameron Bahadori '17 (11-1, 11-5, 11-1) and Rob Schwartz III '19 (11-1, 11-1, 11-2) added wins from positions nine and 10 to complete the sweep for the Purple & White.
