WPI: Doolin and Wood Help Key Softball Sweep of City-Rival Clark

WORCESTER – Senior Clare Doolin (Newton, MA) struck out a career high 16 batters in game one and freshman Caraline Wood (Averill Park, NY) batted 3-for-4, including a double and her first collegiate home run, to go along with three RBI and two runs scored in game two as WPI swept city-rival Clark, 4-3 and 15-2 (5 inn.), in a NEWMAC softball set Friday at Rooftop Field.

Doolin fanned the first nine batters she faced, including two looking, before yielding a leadoff base hit to senior Alyssa Wright (Manchester, NH). Following a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jocie Orangio (Maynard. MA), Doolin struck out the final two batters of the fourth to bring her total to 11. She initially set a career high with her 12th K to begin the bottom of the fifth.

Offensively, junior Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA) drew a two out walk, stole second and raced
home on an RBI fielder's choice by classmate Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) for the 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Sophomore Natalie Fabrizio (Hampstead, NH) launched her first collegiate home run in the form of a two-run blast to center in the sixth. Later in the frame, Gurska used an RBI double to give the Crimson and Gray the 4-0 advantage.

After Doolin rang up her 15th batter, Wright tripled down the right field line to chase home freshman Michelle Robidas (Chelmsford, MA) to put the Cougars on the board in the home half of the sixth. Wright then touched home thanks to an Orangio sacrifice bunt as Clark cut its deficit in half (4-2). Doolin ended the sixth with for her 16th strikeout of the day.

Senior Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, NH) made it a one-run game with a solo shot to center to begin the bottom of the seventh for the 10th of her career. Freshman Kayleigh McHugh (Pepperell, MA) was in scoring position when the game ended on a fly out to right.

Gallagher (RBI, run), junior Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) (run) and sophomore Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) all batted 2-for-4 in the opener. Both of Shevchuk's hits were doubles while Gurska added another. Sophomore Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), Murphy-Cook and Gallagher each swiped a base and sophomore RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) contributed with a sacrifice bunt. Doolin (6-1) allowed three runs on five hits and did not issue a walk in 6 1/3. Sophomore Casey Arpin (Uxbridge, MA) struck out one of the final two batters of the game to earn her third save of the season.

Wright went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored as Orangio laid down a pair of sacrifice bunts. Sophomore Brenna Foley (Charlton, MA) (4-4) was tagged with four runs – three earned – on 10 hits with one strikeout and a pair of walks in the complete game for Clark.

Game two saw WPI take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a 2-RBI triple by Gallagher and a two-out run-producing single by Wood. Junior Lauren Mackey (Dublin, NH) broke through for Clark with a blast to left field in the bottom of the second.

The Boynton Hillers then put 11 on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Gurska and Wood each delivered a two-run homer while freshman Kylie Juarez (Elk Grove, CA) and Gallagher each drove in a pair with a single. Juarez scampered home on a wild pitch as Biney and Shevchuk added RBI singles.

Mackey struck again in the bottom of the fourth, this time with an RBI double to left center for the second Clark run of the contest. Freshman Renee LeClaire (Merrimack, NH) singled in the final run of the game in the top of the fifth.

Gallagher finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, four RBI and four runs scored as Biney batted 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Katie Chagami (Waipahu, HI) also went 2-for-3 to go with a run scored. Murphy-Cook pocketed a pair of stolen bases while Shevchuk swiped one. Wood and Murphy-Cook also turned a double play to end the game.

Sophomore Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) improved to 6-1 as she allowed one run on one hit while striking out three and walking one in three innings. Junior Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ), meanwhile, surrendered one run on three hits and fanned three in the final two frames.

All three of Clark's hits were for extra bases. Mackey totaled six bases (HR, 2B, two RBI, run) while Kraytenberg also doubled. Sophomore Sami West (Gonic, NH) and freshman Taylor Erickson (Natick, MA) shared time in the circle for the Cougars.
