BIDDEFORD, Maine — Gordon Men's Lacrosse fell victim to a tough shooting
night and the Nor'easters of UNE took advantage in an 11-2 victory on
the Big Blue Turf. The Fighting Scots led 2-1 in the early stages of the
second quarter, but failed to score another goal in the slanted defeat.
UNE
improves to 2-1 in the CCC and 7-5 overall this season. Gordon could
not build off of Saturday's thrilling victory and falls to 1-2 in
conference. The Fighting Scots currently sit 1-9 through 10 games in
2016.
Goalkeepers on both sides had their work cut out for them
in the early going with several good
possessions on each end of the
field. Cody Greenwald
(Albany, N.Y.) kept the Nor'easters out of the goal for the first 11
minutes, but UNE's Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H.) capitalized on a man-up
advantage off a feed from Philip Young (Unionville, Pa.).
Sophomore Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) got the Scots on the scoreboard with just 48 ticks in the first quarter by putting home a Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) pass.
Gordon took its first lead in the 20th minute when the red-hot Evans quickly scored an unassisted goal right off of a defensive clear.
However,
the Fighting Scots would not find the net again in almost 41 minutes of
play. UNE tied the game with seven minutes left in the first half and
twice more in the final three minutes to take a 4-2 lead at the break.
Gordon
outshot the Nor'easters in the second half and had the same number of
attempts on frame, but UNE finished 7-of-12 attempts compared to a
0-for-12 mark for the Scots.
Auger and Young both registered hat tricks.
Greenwald
attempted to keep Gordon within striking distance with an impressive 14
saves, but UNE's duo in goal combined to make 17 to silence the Scots.
Gordon is off this weekend and will look to break back into the win column next Tuesday at home against Roger Williams.
This
game marks the first time the two schools have not played to a one-goal
differential since Gordon beat the Nor'easters 10-2 during the 2011
season. The previous five meetings, including a playoff win for Gordon,
were all one-goal games.
