HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons top three singles players all went 2-0 and UMass Boston took each of the first eight points, to cruise past host Rhode Island College.
Wang and Bhasin opened the match with a dominating 8-1 win at number one doubles.
Second doubles would prove to be far closer, but DeLasse and Guang Huang (Quincy, Mass.) hung
on for a 9-7 win. All tied at 6-6 on court three, Zeke Hernandez (Baytown, Texas) and Hector Mata (San Salvador, El Salvador) took the final two games, to earn an 8-6 win at third doubles.
The Beacons pushed their lead to 4-0 at number three singles, as Wang dominated Alan Esposito 6-1, 6-0.
Co-captain Vlad Leopard (Carnikava, Latvia) clinched the victory at fifth singles, as the senior took a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Sophomore Sanshrut Sharma (Mumbai, India) tacked on a win at fourth singles with a super tiebreaker win, as he took a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 decision.
Bhasin needed a super tiebreaker win as well, as the freshman came back from a set down, to take a 6-7, 7-5, 10-3 victory.
UMass Boston earned their eighth and final point at number one singles, as DeLasse took a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory.
Rhode Island College avoided the shutout with a win in sixth singles. Matt Gambardella defeated Hernandez 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to close out the match.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sharma was playing in his first collegiate match at number four singles. With the win, he improved to a team-best 6-2 in singles play and earned his third-straight victory.
- Leopard earned his second collegiate singles victory in today's match. He had opened the season 0-7.
- UMass Boston improved to 12-15 all-time against the Anchormen. The Beacons have won five in a row and seven of their past nine meetings.
UMass Boston will travel to Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
