Springfield Men's Tennis Clinches Spot In NEWMAC Championship With 7-2 Win Over Clark

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield College men's tennis team clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship with a 7-2 victory over Clark University at Appleton Courts on Wednesday afternoon.

The win boosts Springfield's record to 8-6, 3-2 in NEWMAC play.  Under the direction of first-year head coach Chad Stoloff, this marks the most wins for Springfield in NEWMAC play since 2008, and the Pride earned a spot in the NEWMAC Championship field for the first time since the 2012 campaign was the fourth-seed.

The Pride began today's match earning all three doubles points, highlighted by a gritty effort at the top squad of Court Honda (Marioka, Japan) and Alex Romaine (Stamford, Conn.).  Facing an early 5-2 decifit, the duo rattled off the final six games en route to an 8-5 victory.  Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) and Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) cruised to an 8-4 win at No. 2 and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) and Cameron Grant (Babylon, N.Y.) notched an 8-6 victory at No. 3.

Springfield picked up wins at the top four singles spots to clinch the critical NEWMAC victory.  DeVarennes eased his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Romaine added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2.  Honda registered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Danielwicz sealed the afternoon's triumph with a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 4.

Springfield will conclude on Saturday afternoon when it travels to face Babson for a 1:00 pm contest.
