Fitchburg State Splits With Curry, 2-0/5-4

Falcons earn 2-0 shutout victory in game one; Drop nightcap 5-4 in eight innings
MILTON, Mass. The Fitchburg State University softball team registered a spilt with the Colonels of Curry College in a non-conference double header at D. Forbes Will Field Wednesday afternoon.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the top of the first as freshman Maddie Medina drew a one out walk, move to second on a ground out and scoring on a two-run blast by sophomore Emily Comtois for the 2-0 lead.

That's all the offense the Falcons would need as junior pitcher Galen Kerr shutdown the Colonels for
the remainder of the contest, giving up just one hit with 11 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work, while sophomore Mikayla Lambert took the loss for Curry, allowing two runs on three hits and one K in the complete game effort.

Comtois led the way for the Green and Gold, going 1-for-3 at the dish with a home run, one run scored and two RBI, while senior Tori Cyrus and freshman Kaylee Sylvestre collected the other two hits for the Falcons. Junior Marissa Bruno registered the lone hit of the contest for Curry.

In the night cap, Fitchburg State jumped out to an early lead again as junior Jessalynne Brown (singled up the middle, driving in senior Marissa Gemma, who led off the frame with a double for the 1-0 margin in the top of the first.

Curry answered in the bottom half of the frame when Lambert hit a sacrifice fly to left field, plating senior Amy Nolan, who opened the stanza with a single to knot the score at 1-1.

The Falcons tacked on the next two runs of the game to open up a 3-1 lead as Cyrus hit a solo homerun in the top of the third inning to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead before brown drew a walk and got into a rundown, allowing. sophomore Jill Schultze to scamper home in the top of the sixth.

The Colonels cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth when Bruno hit a solo shot to center to o the make the score 3-2, while in the bottom half of the seventh, Lambert hit doubled to left field with two outs, plating Nolan to knot the score at 3-3 to force extra innings.

The Falcons regained the lead in the top of the eighth on a run scoring single by Comtois that drove home Medina for the 4-3 margin going into the bottom half of the stanza. Curry responded however as sophomore Jessica Saluti hit an RBI single to drive in pinch runner McKenna Barlow before Nolan dropped a single into left field allowing Bruno to score, resulting in the 5-4 game two final.

Sophomore Jordan Lizotte picked up the victory for the Colonels, going the distance, throwing eight innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five, while Kerr took the loss for the Falcons in relief, pitching two innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three. Sylvestre took a no-decision for the Falcons, starting the game and pitching five and two thirds of an inning, allowing two runs while scattering nine hits and striking out nine.

Offensively for the Falcons, Brown went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double, while Cyrus hit 1-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and an RBI. For the Colonels, Nolan finished 4-for-5, including two runs scored and an RBI, while Saluti registered three hits and a run batted in.
