Tufts Sailors Tie for Third in Sharpe Trophy Team Race to Open Spring Season

CRANSTON, RI - The Tufts co-ed sailing team reached the final four and tied for third overall at the Sharpe Trophy Team Race hosted by Brown to resume the 2015-16 season.

In the 10-team regatta, the Jumbos posted a 7-2 record in the round-robin races. The Jumbos defeated Harvard, Bowdoin, MIT, Roger Williams, Yale, Rhode Island, and Brown. They took losses against Dartmouth and another Brown team.

Team racing puts three dinghies from each squad against each other and adds up the finishes first through sixth. Tufts took 1-2-4 positions against a Brown team and went 1-2-5 versus Bowdoin, Roger Williams, and Yale.

The Jumbos' 7-2 mark put Tufts into the final four with Brown, Dartmouth, and MIT. However, the Jumbos lost all three races in the final. That left them with a 7-5 overall record to tie with MIT (also 7-5). Brown won at 10-2 and Dartmouth was second with a 9-3 mark.

The Jumbo dinghies featured junior skipper Scott Barbano with freshman crew Ian Morgan, senior skipper Casey Gowrie with freshman crew Taylor Hart, and junior skipper Griffin Rolander with sophomore crew Emily Shanley-Roberts. Gowrie was joined by freshman crew Florian Eenkema van Dijk for one race.
