Sailing captured two eighth-place finishes this weekend (Athletic Communications).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard sailing team placed
eighth at the New England Team Race Championship, hosted by Coast Guard,
and at the Mystic Lake Team Race, hosted by Tufts, while also racing to
13th at the Emily Wick Trophy Women's Regatta, hosted by Connecticut
College.
At the New England Team Race Championship, the Crimson tallied a 5-6
record for an eighth-place finish sailing in FJ vessels. With skippers
Andrew Mollerus, Nick Sertl and Marek Zaleski and crews Sydney
Karnovsky, Nomin-Erdene Jagdagdorj and Julia Lord, the Crimson
registered its victories over Roger Williams, Dartmouth, Coast Guard,
Bowdoin, and Boston University.
The Mystic Lake Team Race saw similar results as Harvard posted
another eighth-place mark. Overall, the Crimson grabbed wins over Boston
University, Rhode Island and Northeastern. Sailing in Larks, Skippers
included Nicolas Karnovsky, Andrew Puopolo and Jackson Wagner, while the
crews included Alejandra Resendiz, Christine Gosioco and Robert
Anderson.
The A-division of Taylor Ladd and Kirstin Anderson recorded 75
points, while the B-division of Taylor Gavula and Lena Episalla
registered 100 points. Both pairings sailed to eight top-10 results in
the 16-race regatta at the Emily Wick Trophy Women's Regatta.
The Crimson will compete in its most regattas of the spring season
with the Presidents' Trophy (Boston University), Thompson Trophy (Coast
Guard/Connecticut College), Owen and Mosbacher/Kapp Trophies (Cornell),
Oberg Trophy (MIT) and Savin Hill Central Series (Boston College) lined
up from April 16-17.

Tufts Sailors Tie for Third in Sharpe Trophy Team Race to Open Spring Season
CRANSTON, RI - The Tufts co-ed sailing team reached the final four
and tied for third overall at the Sharpe Trophy Team Race hosted by
Brown to resume the 2015-16 season.
In the 10-team regatta, the Jumbos posted a 7-2 record in the round-robin races. The Jumbos defeated Harvard, Bowdoin, MIT, Roger Williams, Yale, Rhode Island, and Brown. They took losses against Dartmouth and another Brown team.
Team racing puts three dinghies from each squad against each other and adds up the finishes first through sixth. Tufts took 1-2-4 positions against a Brown team and went 1-2-5 versus Bowdoin, Roger Williams, and Yale.
The Jumbos' 7-2 mark put Tufts into the final four with Brown, Dartmouth, and MIT. However, the Jumbos lost all three races in the final. That left them with a 7-5 overall record to tie with MIT (also 7-5). Brown won at 10-2 and Dartmouth was second with a 9-3 mark.
The Jumbo dinghies featured junior skipper Scott Barbano with freshman crew Ian Morgan, senior skipper Casey Gowrie with freshman crew Taylor Hart, and junior skipper Griffin Rolander with sophomore crew Emily Shanley-Roberts. Gowrie was joined by freshman crew Florian Eenkema van Dijk for one race.

In a very competitive field comprised of nine programs, seven of which are ranked in the Sailing World College top-20, the Engineers compiled a record of 7-5 for third place just behind No. 18 Brown University (10-2) and Dartmouth College (9-3). MIT won the third place head-to-head tiebreaker over No. 19 Tufts University to claim the third position.
Senior David Larson (La Jolla, Calif.), junior Alec Stewart (Duxbury, Mass.) alongside sophomores Ty Ingram (White Plains, N.Y.) and Cutter O'Connell (San Diego, Calif.) served as the skippers at the Sharpe Trophy for the Cardinal and Gray. Competing as the crews at the regatta were seniors Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan (Temple, N.H.) and Christopher Ford (Millbrae, Calif.), juniors Jordan Ladd (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kyle Joba-Woodruff (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Greta Farrell (Huntington, N.Y.).
In the first round, the Engineer bested Brown (2-3-5), Bowdoin College (1-3-5), Dartmouth (2-3-4), Yale University (1-2-4), Rhode Island University (1-2-6) and Brown II (1-2-5). As a team, MIT compiled a record of 6-3 in the opening stage, before advancing to the Final Four.
In the Final Four, MIT came away with a win over Tufts (2-3-4), but Fell to Brown (3-4-6) and Dartmouth (4-5-6) for a mark of 1-2 in the stage and an overall mark of 7-5 for the weekend.
This weekend was the fifth time since the 2009-10 season that MIT competed at the Sharpe Trophy and third time in which the Cardinal and Gray secured a third place finish among elite teams.
MIT returns to action next weekend, March 12-13 in the Wood Team Race hosted by Harvard University and the Tufts Invitational Team Race hosted by Tufts University.

The Crimson held a 3-3 record after day one of the regatta, good for fifth, posting victories over Roger Williams, Rhode Island and Brown, and falling to Dartmouth, Tufts and Yale. Harvard faced Brown in the second flight of the day and was able to place second, third, and fifth for its first win.
The Crimson's second race was against Rhode Island where the team posted second-, third- and fourth-place results. Harvard fell to Yale after finishing first, fifth and sixth, while winning its fourth race against Roger Williams crossing the line first, second and third. Crimson vessels were not able to hold on in flights seven and eight as it was tripped up by Tufts and Dartmouth in its final races on Saturday.
Racing in 420's, FJ's, and Z420's, the Crimson finished day two with a 5-4 record, keeping its fifth-place spot against the nine other teams. In Flight nine Harvard saw MIT, where the Crimson finished second, third and fourth, before falling to Bowdoin placing third, fourth and sixth in flight 10. In its final race of the day, the Crimson was able to secure its fifth win by finishing second, third and fourth against host Brown.
The Crimson will compete in three regattas March 12-13 including hosting its first spring regatta in the Wood Trophy Team Race. The team will also travel to Maryland for the Women's Navy Regatta hosted by Navy and the St. Mary's Team Race hosted by St. Mary's.

Tufts Varsity Men Capture Bronze at the Snake Regatta

The Jumbos were 15 seconds out of first place with a time of 14:15.6 and just edged out defending New England Champions Bates by one second, with the first boats of Colby, UMass, UNH and Middlebury trailing. The Jumbos prioritized the Varsity Four next, and placed two even boats 15th and 16th in the eights event.
The third-place Varsity eight had Hannah Frankel, Zach Merchant, Zhuangchen Zhou, Tyler McCullough, Tyler Hagedorn, Chandler Glass, Jonathan Williams, Andrew MacMillen and Ryan Bell on board.
In the aforementioned Fours event Tufts placed fifth in the 19-boat field, trailing New England small boat stalwarts Bowdoin, URI, Colby and UMass. Tufts timed out 39 seconds behind the winners, consolation for the Polar Bear loss to the Tufts Football team later in the day. The Tufts boating was Maria Karam, Jonathan Lapadula, Andrew Warren, Matt Cohen and Jackson Horwitz.
The Jumbo walk-on novice crew had their first race ever, after four weeks and approximately 20 practices. The Jumbos acquitted themselves well, with the novice men sixth of 10.
Next weekend's Head of the Charles will see Tufts in action with Men's College Fours on Saturday and Men's College Eights on Sunday afternoon.

Women Sailing Set for NEISA Championship, Coed Vessels Take On Four Regattas
The Crimson sails in five regattas this weekend, including the
NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship and its second home invitational.
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – The Harvard sailing team aims to capture multiple trophies this weekend as it competes at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship hosted by Boston College, its own Harvard Invitational, the Danmark Trophy hosted by Coast Guard, the Smith Trophy hosted by MIT and the Mystic Lake Invitational hosted by Tufts. The championship, the Danmark Trophy and the Smith Trophy will take place Oct. 3-4, while the Harvard Invitational and the Mystic Lake Invitational are one-day events on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, respectively.

Perdomo Named NEISA Coed Sailor of the Week
Perdomo records his second Sailor of the Week honor.
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – Juan Carlos Perdomo
has been named the NEISA Coed Sailor of the Week after winning the
NEISA Men's Singlehanded Championship at New Haven, Conn from Sept.
26-27.With 10 top-five finishes in the 14-race regatta, Perdomo topped the 27 other sailors while keeping a 10-point distance between himself and the runner-up. The junior took over the lead early in the event, winning race four before going on to finish in the top-five in eight of the remaining 10 races.
By capturing the Singlehanded Championship, Perdomo has qualified for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Singlehanded National Championship, which will be hosted by Old Dominion November 6-8. Perdomo also competed at the event in 2013 and finished as the runner-up. He is the first member of the Crimson to win the NEISA Singlehanded Championship since Vincent Porter '07 in 2004.
Michael Drumm '15 was the last member of the Crimson to be named NEISA Coed Sailor of the Week, taking home the honor on April 8, 2015 after guiding Harvard to a second-place finish at the Marchiando Trophy Team Race at MIT. This is the second time Perdomo has been named NEISA Coed Sailor of the Week where last time he was honored as a freshmen on Nov. 13, 2013 after his runner-up performance at the 2013 New England Championship.

ROCKLAND, Maine - The annual Schooner Parade past the breakwater lighthouse in Rockland, Maine will be held tomorrow, July 11th from 2-4pm. This annual Schooner event is one not to be missed as it is a great opportunity to get lots of photographs.
The Schooners you will see if you make the walk out the breakwater are beautiful ranging in age from 31 to 143 years old, Victory Chimes the last of her kind three master and ranging in size from 46 feet to 132 feet long. Some of the Schooners you will see are American Eagle (Rockland), Victory Chimes (Rockland), Lewis R. French (Camden), Angelique (Camden), Mary Day (Camden), Stephan Taber (Rockland) and more.

Schooner Parade is put together by the Maine Windjammer Association. Maine Windjammer Association puts on several event such as Great Schooner Race, Schooner Parade and WoodenBoat Sail In.

BEST OF 2013: The Maine Windjammer Project
Today only a handful of the sailing vessels remain. Many of them were simply used until they were worn out and replaced by a new one. During the Great Depression, thousands of these boats were just abandoned where they stood and left to rot.
