No. 4 Amherst Powers Past Skidmore, 19-8

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College used three goals each from Quinn Moroney '16 and Evan Wolf '19 as the fourth-ranked Purple & White powered their way to a 19-8 non-conference victory over Skidmore College, 19-8 in Tuesday afternoon's men's lacrosse game at Pratt Field.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

• Amherst scored five goals in each of the first two periods for the second time in as many games.
• Kane Haffey '16 got the scoring started on a feed from Moroney, before Rob Butko '16 fired it into the net on a pass from Charlie Gill '16 to give Amherst a 2-0 lead at the 8:10 mark.
• Dylan Park '16, Moroney and Brett Inglesby '17 each delivered unassisted goals in the frame to give the hosts a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.
• In the second quarter, Park netted the game's first man-up goal when he took advantage of a nice feed from Moroney at the 11:51 mark to make it 6-0. The Purple & White extended their cushion to 7-0 just 39 seconds later when Brogan Mahon '19 netted his first collegiate goal.
• Skidmore answered with a pair goals from Justin Csenge and Jack Curry to set the score at 7-2 with 7:05 to play in the half. Curry's score was aided by Jack Metzler's pass.
• Three straight scores in a span of less than five minutes by Connor Sheehan '18, Wolf and Moroney lifted Amherst's advantage to 10-2. Haffey and Moroney provided the assists on Sheehan and Wolf's markers respectively.
• With 22 seconds left in the second quarter, Corbin Dunn scored an unassisted goal to make it 10-3 at intermission.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

• The Purple & White pulled away in the third quarter Haffey scored an extra-man goal on a nice dish from Park at the 13:48 mark before Moroney scored his third of the game on a feed from Butko to make it 12-3 with 11:39 to play in the frame.
• The Thoroughbreds scored through Kevin Mulvey who was assisted by Csenge, but four straight markers helped Amherst stake a 16-4 lead after 45 minutes of action. Inglesby scored his second of the game, Wolf scored twice in a two-minute span, and Chris Albanese '17 registered his tally with just 35 seconds left in the stanza.
• The Purple & White scored three of the first four goals of the fourth quarter as Max Keeley '18, Andrew Ford '19, and Jack Cahill '18 each found the back of the net. Ford's first collegiate goal was assisted by Jack Norton '19, while Cahill received a terrific pass from Jacob Waskowitz '17 to make it 19-5 with 3:47 remaining in the contest.
• Andrew DeStefano, Will Murphy, Mulvey and Curry each found the back of the net for Skidmore in the final 5:11, with Eric Megnia providing the helper on Murphy's strike to help set the final score at 19-8 in favor of the Purple & White.

BY THE NUMBERS

• Ford led all players with eight ground balls, while Austin Park '19 and Daniel Annino '16 followed with six and five respectively. Moroney fired six shots on frame, while Ryan Cassidy '16 caused three opponent turnovers to help seal the win.
• Between the posts, Cody Tranbarger '17 made five saves in 45 minutes of play, while Justin Imperatore '19 and Thomas Gilligan '16 each made a stop in 7:42 and 7:18 of action each.
• Jack McElgunn picked up seven ground balls to lead Skidmore in defeat, while Nicolas DeBlasio followed with six. Logan Hart added a pair of caused turnovers, while Chris Baughan made 14 saves in 51:47 in goal for the Thoroughbreds.
