Gordon College Men's Tennis Secures Perfect Day One

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.— Gordon Men's Tennis opened its spring season with a pair of convincing victories, 8-1 over Lebanon Valley and 7-2 over Millersville. The Fighting Scots improved to 4-1 during the 2015-16 season and have three more matches on the docket for the remainder of their southern swing.

Despite missing top flight player Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) Gordon rolled to an easy victory against Lebanon Valley in the first match of the day. Sophomore Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) filled in nicely atop the lineup, not dropping a game at first singles. Gordon freshman Nathan Lookwhy (Westborough, Mass.) and Kristopher Marineau (Auburn, N.H.) both handled their opponents while dropping only one game at second and fifth singles respectively.

Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) also picked up singles wins in
the match.

Gordon swept doubles action, but the Flying Dutchman sent everything they could at the Scots. Marineau and Michael D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) blanked their opponents at the third flight, but the top two matches remained close throughout. Casady and Lookwhy eventually pulled away for an 8-4 win at the top spot, but Godwin and Daugherty needed to fight through a tiebreak to pull out their match, 9-8.

The second match of the day provided to be a little bit tougher for the Scots, but Gordon was able to climb out of an early hole. After Casady and Lookwhy took care of business at the top doubles spot, 8-1, Gordon failed to get another point in combo action. Millersville's Christian Boyer (Fleetwood, Pa.) and Christian Akerley (Oaklyn, N.J.) downed Gordon's No. 2 duo, while Noah Ginder (Schaefferstown, Pa.) and David Yunginger (Mount Joy, Pa.) managed an 8-2 win at three.

The Fighting Scots fought right back by winning all six singles matches, five of which came in straight sets. Godwin was forced into a third-set tiebreak with Akerley at the fourth flight, ultimately winning 10-3 in the super.

Sophomore D'Antuono also picked up his first singles win of the season after sitting out in the fall.

The Scots are off until Wednesday morning when they face a tough Baldwin Wallace squad at 8 a.m. at the Port Royal Racquet Club.
