UMass Boston Men's Lacrosse Improves to 4-0 With 17-9 Win over Becker

BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time since the 2005 season, lacrosse has opened a new campaign with four straight victories, as the Beacons cruised past Becker College with a 17-9 win Tuesday afternoon at James Cotter Field.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 17, Becker College 9
UMass Boston (4-0, 0-0 Little East Conference)
Becker College (0-4, 0-0 New England Collegiate Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling into a very hole, the Beacons came roaring back as they outscored Becker 6-2 through the first 15 minutes of play.  They would go into the halftime break with a comfortable 10-3 lead, and would cruise in the final two frames scoring seven more times.  Becker's biggest quarter proved to be its last, as they netted five goals, but it proved too little too late.

Matthew Duggan (Weymouth, Mass.) was the driving force behind the Beacons attack, with his
game-high four goals.  Conor Smith (Kingston, Mass.) also had a big day for the Blue and White, scoring twice, while also tallying five assists.  Smith is now the second player in the last two games to record eight points in a single affair.

Between the pipes, senior Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) had to make seven stops through the first three quarters to earn his third win of the year.  AJ Collette (West Springfield, Mass.) came in the fourth and tallied four stops in his second appearance of the week.

Face-off man Phil Truong (Quincy, Mass.) had his best game of the year as he collected 13 face-off victories on 23 attempts.  He also posted six ground balls, which was a game-high.  In the Beacons defensive third Jack Dillon (Barrington, R.I.) caused a pair of turnovers, and also had two ground balls.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMass Boston finished 20-for-24 on clear attempts
  • The Beacons are now 2-0 all-time against Becker College
  • Senior Calvin Lee recorded three goals and four assists in the win, and now has 12 goals and 15 assists through the first four games
