NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – A total of six home runs including a program tying record three from Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) gave the ninth-ranked Beacons their fourth-straight win as they defeated Worcester State University by the final of 16-6 Thursday afternoon at the NEBC Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons pounded out a combined 13 runs through the first five innings with eight of those runs coming via the long ball.  Fowler's near record setting day came to a close in the eighth inning as the senior All-American finished 5-for-5 with three RBI, three runs scored and a double.  Fellow bash brother Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) also had a multi-home run day as he crushed two balls over the fence to finish 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Even with the five home runs between the seniors, it was junior Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) who had the home run to remember.  Having his best season to-date in a Beacons uniform, Riley crushed his first career grand slam, and drove in a career-high five runs.

Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Kyle Penney (Tolland, Conn.) each ripped a double in the one-sided victory as the Beacons swept their home-and-home series with the Lancers.

Senior lefty Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) collected his first win of the year after going just one inning.  Tylor Arruda (New Bedford, Mass.) went a game-best four innings, and allowed just one run on three hits, while also striking out a pair.

Josh Boucher was charged with the loss after allowing nine earned runs on eight hits, four of which were homers.  He did manage a game-high four strikeouts, and walked three batters in 2.2 innings.

Worcester State was held to the lone run in the bottom of the first inning, and had endure the Beacons onslaught over the next five innings.  The Lancers second run of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fifth and made it 13-2 at the time.  Worcester State would tack on three more runs through the seventh inning.  After a scoreless eighth inning, UMB put the final nail in the coffin in the ninth with three more runs, while the Lancers managed just the lone tally.

Softball Sweeps Framingham State Behind Total Team Effort

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—UMass Boston softball extended their winning streak to 10 games in a row against Framingham State University Thursday afternoon, thanks to a pair of very different victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Neither side held the upper hand for long in game one, as the two teams traded the lead three times and were tied going into the seventh inning. Game two would be a much more relaxing affair for the Beacons, as they rushed out to an early lead and Jess Greenspan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) cruised to her first shutout of the season.

GAME ONE

Three different Beacons came up with clutch two-run hits and freshman Drew Washington (Bordentown, N.J.) pitched well in her first collegiate win.

Washington overcame four Beacons' errors to earn her first win of the year. The freshman allowed six hits and six runs, just three earned, over seven innings. She also struck out three and walked three batters.

Sophomore Ari Bilotta (Leominster, Mass.) led UMass Boston with three hits and added one run and one RBI. Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.) finished 1-1 with three runs scored, two RBI and two walks and Gigi Braga (Medford, Mass.) tacked on two hits and a run scored.

UMass Boston Softball Earns Doubleheader Split With Bridgewater State

BOSTON, Mass.—Behind a huge game two from junior Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, R.I.), UMass Boston softball salvaged a split with Bridgewater State University Saturday afternoon at the UMB Softball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After struggling to capitalize on their offensive chances in game one, UMass Boston struck for six runs in the first two innings of game two in a victory.


Pawlina broke out of a slump in a big way with four hits and four RBI in the doubleheader. Freshman Tori Dicenso (Lynn, Mass.) had a big day as well, as she finished with three runs, three RBI and was not retired on the day.

Bridgewater State struck for three runs in the top of the first and Mackenzie Holt kept the Beacons off balance just enough in a 3-1 Bears win.

Southern Maine Rallies Past UMass Boston Lacrosse In Little East Opener

GORHAM, Maine – An eight-goal fourth quarter lifted the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine to a 17-14 win over lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Hannford Field in the Little East Conference opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a seven-goal third quarter, gave UMB their first solid lead of the afternoon, the host Huskies responded in-kind as they scored three unanswered to tie the game at 12-12.  After a Tre Mason goal put the Beacons ahead by one, the Huskies fired off four straight to take a two-goal lead (15-13) with 2:19 to play.  Josh Holmes (Weymouth, Mass.) netted the Beacons final goal to make it a one score affair.

Unfortunately, USM would have the final say as they netted back-to-back goals to clinch the victory.

The Beacons dominated offensively in Saturday's contest as they outshot USM 53-47.  The two teams were almost identical in the first two frames, with USM holding a slight two-goal edge heading into the break.

After the intermission, the Beacons attack came out firing as they scored four straight to take an 8-6 lead.  Newcomer Ned Parker (Stafford, Va.) owned a pair of goals, in what would be a three-goal showing for the Syracuse University transfer.  Tre Mason (Kelowna, B.C.) and Holmes also got in on the early surge for UMB.  Southern Maine tried to stop the bleeding with a Tristan Dundas score, but they were quickly countered by three more goals, including a man-up tally by Dalton Ring (Holliston, Mass.).  Southern Maine did get a pair to close out the third frame.

Holmes finished Saturday's loss with a game-high five points (3g, 2a) to match the Huskies Steve Gilbert who also had a hat trick and two assists.

Between the pipes Alex Surette (Melrose, Mass.) made 13 stops in his LEC conference opener, while the Huskies Zach Bessette finished with 18 stops, including four in the crucial fourth quarter for USM.

Tom Redmond (Scituate, Mass.) led UMB on the face-off dot with 12 wins and had six ground balls.  Jack Dillon (Barrington, R.I.) tallied a team-high seven GB's and finished with three of the Beacons 10 caused turnovers.  Jacob Sinclair-Steeves (North Reading, Mass.) has 10 face-off wins in Saturday's contest.

No. 4/5 Baseball Pounds Eastern Connecticut In Little East Sweep

MANSFIELD, Conn. – After a tough week of non-conference play, the fourth/fifth ranked Beacons once again found their bats as they pounded out 30 runs on 25 hits to earn a 13-7, 17-4 Little East Conference sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.

UMass Boston Men’s Tennis Eases Past Bridgewater State, 9-0

BOSTON, Mass. – UMass Boston began their Little East Conference title defense in dominating fashion as they shutout Bridgewater State University 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the BC High Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Other than a tough third and fifth single matches, the Beacons made quick work of their first Little East opponent.  In doubles play, Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Miguel Beltran (Ashland, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win, while Josh Bhasin (Tulsa, Okla.) and Guang Huang (Quincy, Mass.) picked-up an 8-1 win at second doubles.  Onkgopotse Mokoka (Pretoria, South Africa) and Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) continued the Beacons winning streak with an 8-4 victory at third doubles.

In singles play DeLasse blanked the Bears' Justin Haley 6-0, 6-0.  Joery Cyraque also registered a pair shutout wins, while at second singles Bhasin registered a 6-1, 6-1 victory.  Mokoka netted a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles to secure UMB's first conference win of 2018.

Sharma had to go to tiebreaker at third singles but ended-up earning a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.  The final win of the date belonged to Tran, who sealed the win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.

UMass Boston Men's Tennis Rallies Past Suffolk 6-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMass Boston men's tennis won the final five singles matches to earn a comeback 6-3 win over Boston rivals Suffolk University Thursday night at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 2-1 after doubles, UMass Boston took the bottom five singles matches to earn their third-consecutive victory.

Miguel Beltran (Ashland, Mass.) was the lone Beacon to finish 2-0. The freshman teamed up with Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for a win at first doubles and he also claimed a win at second singles.

The Beacons' top doubles pair gave UMass Boston an early lead, as Beltran and DeLasse claimed an 8-4 win at first doubles.

Suffolk University struck back with 8-6 wins at second and third doubles to claim a 2-1 lead.

The Rams extended their advantage to 3-1, when Ariel Ilarslan Russo defeated DeLasse 6-1, 6-4 at first singles.

Beltran started the Beacons' comeback with a 6-2, 6-1 rout at second singles.

Senior Sanshrut Sharma (Mumbai, India) tied the match at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at fourth singles.

Sophmore Onkgopotse Mokoka (Pretoria, South Africa) gave UMass Boston the lead for good at fifth singles. He easily blanked Suffolk's Rami Esrawi 6-0, 6-0 to make it 4-3 UMass Boston.

The Beacons clinched the victory at sixth singles. Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) was able to cruise past Kevin Greenman 6-2, 6-2 to earn the match victory.

In the closest singles match, junior Josh Bhasin (Tulsa, Okla.) earned a comeback 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 win over Suffolk's Mike DeFelice at third-flight singles.

BY THE NUMBERS

Beltran went 2-0 in a match for the first time in his collegiate career. He had one career singles and doubles win prior to Thursday.
After starting the season 0-3, UMass Boston has won three-straight matches and won 22 of a possible 27 total points.
With the victory, UMass Boston earned their fifth-straight win over the Rams, and improved to 20-13 all-time against Suffolk.
Bhasin and Sharma each earned their team-high third singles win of the season.

UMass Boston Lacrosse Wins Second Straight With 22-9 Decision at Regis

WESTON, Mass. – Another first half offensive onslaught carried lacrosse to their second straight win as they dispatched Regis College by the final of 22-9 Thursday afternoon at Regis Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Just like their win on Monday, the Beacons attack erupted scoring at will against their non-conference opponent.  UMB tacked on 12 goals through the first 30 minutes of play, while the defense held the host Pride to just five scores, including one in the second frame.  After the break, the Beacons recorded back-to-back five goal quarters to clinch the victory, while only allowing four goals against.  UMB held the Pride scoreless in the third to gain some insurance on the scoreboard.

Joe Mauceri continued the best week of his young collegiate career, as he registered a career-best five goals.  Senior Clay Arnold continued his surge as the Beacons top attackman scoring his second straight hat trick.

Transfer Tre Mason got back in on the action offensive as well netting three goals to go along with two assists to help UMB most their record back to .500.

Cameron Dixson improved to 2-1 on the year, after collecting his second straight win.  The netminder made one stop in the first two frames, while Alex Fawcett closed out the win with a pair of stops.

Jacob Sinclair-Steeves was dominant tallying a career-high 14 ground balls, while Tommy Wilber, Jr. lifted the Beacons defense with three caused turnovers to go along with a career-best eight ground balls.

Sinclair-Steeves was nearly perfect on the face-off "X" as he went 20-for-23, while Tom Redmond finished 7-for-10 on the dot.

• UMB outshot the Pride 66-22 and were 11-for-13 on clear attempts.

McClellan Gives No. 10 Women’s Hockey An OT Win over William Smith

BOSTON, Mass. – With 53 seconds left in overtime freshman Kateri McClellan (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) fired the puck through a wall of players including the goaltender to give the 10th ranked Beacons a come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win over William Smith College Saturday afternoon in the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With UMass Boston controlling almost every second of the overtime period, McClellan got a great look from right inside the blue line.  The freshman forward fired the puck on goal and hit the far post perfectly as the puck ricocheted in past William Smith goaltender Maggie Salmon.

The goal which was unassisted, capped-off the Beacons come-from-behind win and a sluggish first two periods.  William Smith came out looking to pull-off the upset and held a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.  UMass Boston did eventually even the game at 1-1 thanks to a beautiful coast-to-coast play by Katie Jeter (Winthrop, Mass.).

Unfortunately William Smith would respond late in the second on the power-play, as a shot by Laura Rollins floated over Rachel Myette's (Duxbury, Mass.) glove to give the Herons a 2-1 lead heading into the second break.

In the third, UMass Boston took over and never looked back as they outshot William Smith 15-3.  However they were only able to get the puck past Salmon once, which forced the crucial overtime period.  Score the then equalizer was Kaleigh Beauregard (Gaylord, Mich.) on a laser of a one-timer at the 7:57 mark.

Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) found her teammate wide open at the point.  Beauregard would then blast the puck past the William Smith defense, who did not expect the hard one-timer.

Between the pipes Myette made 25 saves to earn her fifth win of the year (5-2-0).  Salmon, who entered the game as the national leader in total saves, made 35 stops in the non-conference loss.

#6/9 Men's Soccer Fights Back To Earn 1-1 Tie At Babson

MEDFORD, Mass.— Senior Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomores Dom Nda (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Taylor Driggers (Norwich, Conn.) each earned three top-three finishes, to help UMass Boston Outdoor Track & Field finish in third place on the men's and women's side at the Tufts University Sunshine Classic.

UMass Boston Lacrosse Cruises To Conference Win over Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Nick Weiss (Westfield, Mass.) and Matthew Duggan (Weymouth, Mass.) each scored three goals as lacrosse cruised to a 10-4 Little East Conference win over Salem State University Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

UMass Boston Softball Grabs Doubleheader Sweep Against Curry

MILTON, Mass.— UMass Boston softball used a pair of comebacks and stranded runners in scoring position in the final inning in both games, to earn a doubleheader sweep of Curry College on Thursday afternoon.

In just their second extra-inning game of the season, Alexa St. Angelo (Cranston, R.I.) and Vic Zechello (Westborough, Mass.) both came through with RBI singles in the top of the eight, and Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, Mass.) stranded a runner on second to earn a 5-4 game one win.
The Beacons took game two thanks to a three-run top of the sixth inning, with Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Kaitlyn Morse (Arlington, Mass.) providing two-out RBI hits.

GAME ONE
After going through the first seven innings tied 3-3, UMass Boston used three hits in the top of the eighth to grab a 5-3 lead, and then relied on Thomas to shut the door in the bottom of the eighth.
Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, Mass.) led the offensive outburst for the Beacons, as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Zechello added two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Morse and St. Angelo had two hits and an RBI apiece.

In the circle, Thomas improved to 9-3 by going the full eight and allowing four runs, three earned.

UMass Boston Baseball Avenges Big Loss, With 12-4 Win At Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I.— UMass Boston baseball avenged their biggest loss of the season, with seven runs over the final three innings in a 12-4 win over host Roger Williams University.

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Despite combing for 18 hits baseball was only able to muster up six runs on the day as they were swept by Eastern Connecticut State University by the finals of 3-2 and 7-3 Sunday afternoon at ECSU Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
The Beacons grabbed an early lead in the top half of the first, but the Warriors responded with three straight runs over the next four innings to make it 3-1.  UMass Boston cut the deficit to one in the top half of the sixth, but Nick Rascati would hold the Beacons to just one hit over the final 3.1 innings to preserve the win for ECSU.

UMass Boston Softball Earns Historic Sweep Over LEC Preseason Favorite Eastern Conn. St.

MANSFIELD, Conn.— UMass Boston softball combined clutch hitting and a few huge home runs, with great defense and strong pitching to earn their first two wins in program history over Little East Conference power Eastern Connecticut State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After losing their first 40 all-time matchups against the defending LEC Champions, UMass Boston shocked the LEC Preseason Favorite Warriors with a sweep at the Eastern Softball Complex.

Amongst a number of players who had huge days, no one stood out more than freshman shortstop Alexa St. Angelo (Cranston, R.I.). The freshman went 7-for-8 with five RBI , three doubles and a run scored. She scored the game-winning run in game one and drove in the game-winning run in game two.

The Beacons' three-through-six hitters as a whole finished the day 18-for-29 (.621) with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored.

UMass Boston Lacrosse Knocks-Off Plymouth State For Conference Win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – An early fourth quarter goal by Matthew Duggan (Weymouth, Mass.) would be the deciding tally as lacrosse held on to earn their first Little East Conference win of 2016 and their win since 2010 over Plymouth State University as they defeated the Panthers by the final of 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the Holderness School.
