Dynamic Offense Carries Scots to Opening Day Split

CLERMONT, Fla.— Gordon Softball earned its first victory of the season on Monday afternoon, beating Mount Ida 11-3 in the second of their opening two spring break games. The Fighting Scots lost to Bethany in the first game 13-0.

Game One: Gordon 0 – 13 Bethany (W.V.)

The Fighting Scots run into a tough first game of the season, falling in five innings to Bethany out of the President's Athletic Conference. Bethany sophomore Gabrielle Goudy (Powhatan Point, Ohio) had a no-hitter through four and a third innings, while the Bison put up seven runs in the first inning to put the Scots down big.

Gordon sophomore Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine) was credited for the loss after giving up four runs in a third of an inning. Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) came in for relief of Knowlton and struck out one batter.

Rookie Rose Shannon (Ashland, Mass.) broke up the no-hit bid in the fifth inning with a single over the head of the second baseman. Junior Emily Burkhart (Manheim, Pa.) also put a ball into the outfield in the frame for Gordon's final hit of the game.

Outfielder Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md.) led the Bison with four RBI, with most of them coming in a bases clearing triple in the bottom of the first inning. Goudy went the complete game for the victory and struck out eight Scots in five innings.

Game Two: Gordon 11 – 3 Mount Ida

Gordon rebounded nicely in the second game of the day, easily making it past the Mustangs of Mount Ida by eight runs. Knowlton stifled the Mustangs after a tough first outing, going four strong innings while only giving up one run on four hits. The sophomore earned her first win of the season as Gordon's offense exploded out of the gates in the early innings.

A quiet offensive showing in game one allowed Gordon to get its butterflies out of the way and the Scots seemed focused from the opening pitch. All nine batters in the inning reached base safely, six of them on singles to all parts of the yard. Gordon scored five runs in the first inning, but saw its luck run out on three occasions with all outs in the frame coming during plays at the plate.

The Mustangs got one back in the bottom half of the inning when Lucianna Medici (Riverside, R.I.) doubled down the left-field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Burkhart carried over her offense from the end of game one into game two. The junior doubled to center at the top of the third and scored one play later on a double by Hope Zigterman (Villa Park, Ill.) to extend Gordon's lead to 6-1. Zigterman also scored in the inning when Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) beat out a throw from short.

Gordon added three more runs in the fourth with most of them coming off the red-hot Burkhart. Zigterman also added her second RBI of the game in the frame.

Potentially down their last out, Mount Ida avoided the run rule with a two-out, two-RBI single by Jenni Jackson (Marlborough, Mass.).

The Scots scored once more in the seventh for good measure and Kline shut down the Mustangs in the bottom half of the inning to close out Gordon's first victory of 2016.

For the Scots
  • Burkhart, Zigterman and Marissa Meenan (Wayne, Pa.) led the Gordon offense with three hits each between the two games. Burkhart had a team-high three RBI.
  • Kline, Unumb and Sarah Ryder (Telford, Pa.) all finished with two hits apiece.
  • Knowlton struck out three Mustangs to improve to 1-1 this season
  • Gordon had its most hits in a game since a win against Regis in 2014 when they struck for 19 hits.

On Deck

Gordon is right back at it tomorrow morning when they plays Ursinus (2-2) and Simmons (1-1) at 9 and 11 a.m.
