BABSON PARK, Mass.—The Babson College women's soccer
team scored a pair of first-half goals off deflections and got a
second-half tally from sophomore Meghan Lee
(Stow, Mass.) en route to a 3-0 victory over visiting Wellesley College
in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match
on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which moved up to fifth in the NSCAA New England poll on
Tuesday, is now 8-2-3 overall and 2-0-3 in conference play, while
Wellesley falls to 5-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the NEWMAC.
First-year Julia Lindsay (Newton, Mass.) added an assist for the Beavers, who got a combined shutout from first-year goalkeepers Elizabeth Mycock (Windham, Maine) and Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.).
The Green and White jumped on top just 6:06 into the contest as senior Meghan Tyson's
(Scarborough, Maine) corner kick deflected off a Blue defender in the
goal mouth and crossed the line for a 1-0 lead. First-year Jessica Fernandes
(Pawtucket, R.I.) then helped Babson extend its lead in the 40th
minute, chipping the ball over a defender along the touchline and
blistering a shot towards goal that found its way in off a defender to
make it a two-goal game.
Wellesley missed on a golden opportunity to cut the deficit in half
in the 65th minute when sophomore Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.)
drilled the crossbar from inside 15 yards. The Beavers took advantage
minutes later, as Lee notched her first career goal, converting a corner
kick from Lindsay for a 3-0 advantage.
Mycock finished with five saves and Gierschick made one in just over
13 minutes of action for the Green and White, while Blue senior
goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.) stopped eight shots in defeat.
The Beavers finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson hosts Coast Guard, while Wellesley will take on Mount Holyoke.
