UMass Boston Tops Salem State 7-2

Salem, Mass.  – UMass Boston defeated Salem State 7-2 in a Little East Conference match on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Campus Tennis Courts. The Beacons have now won four of their last six matches and even their record at 4-4 while improving to 3-2 in the Little East. Salem State slides to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference.

UMass Boston took a 2-1 lead into singles play after winning two-of-three doubles matches. Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) defeated April McDermott (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Cassie Morrison (Clinton, MA), 8-3 at first doubles while Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) beat  Melina Mavroforos (Amesbury, MA) and Conor Deedy (Rockport, Mass.) 8-1 in third doubles. Hillary Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) and Ann Spence (Attleboro, Mass.) earned a point for Salem State with an 8-2 victory in second doubles.

The Beacons took five-of-six singles matches to win handily. Garcia defeated McDermott, 6-3, 6-1 at first singles while Smith took second singles 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 over Morrison. Gustafson defeated Celebi at third singles for Salem State, 6-2, 6-4 for the Vikings only win.

Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.), Erickson and Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) all won at fourth through sixth singles to round out the victory.

The Vikings travel to Western Connecticut for a Little East match on Saturday at 1:00 PM while the Beacons go to UMass Dartmouth Thursday for an LEC match beginning at 3:00 PM.
