Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Nicole Belfonti's goal in the 41st minute proved the difference maker as George Washington defeated the UMass women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Sports Complex. The Minutewomen had a chance to equalize the game in the 88th minute with a corner kick opportunity, but were unable to convert.

The Colonials remain in first place in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-0-0 league record and a 9-4-0 overall mark. UMass falls to 4-5-3 overall and 1-2-1 in A-10 action. The Minutewomen will host a pair of conference games this week at Rudd Field with Davidson visiting Thursday, Oct. 15 (4 p.m.) and Rhode Island on Sunday, Oct. 18 (1 p.m.).

The two sides traded offensive chances through much of the first half. The Colonials took the lead at the 40:28 mark when Belfonti was able to re-direct a corner kick service from Brooke Stoller inside the near post for her second goal of the season.

The Minutewomen nearly equalized two minutes later on a chip shot from Laura Johns, but GW keeper Miranda Horn was able to high point the ball while falling backwards and landing just before the goal line.

In the second half, Megan Burke had a pair of strikes saved by Horn in the 64th and 70th minutes.
Entering the final 10 minutes of play, the Colonials were able to control much of the possession trying to work the sidelines and corners to kill the clock. UMass was able to generate a corner kick opportunity in the 88th minute, but Julia Weithofer's service was turned aside by the GW defense.

The Colonials held a 10-to-7 advantage in shots and a 6-to-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cassidy Babin made five saves in net for UMass, while Horn made three saves for GW.
