No. 19 Purple & White Shut Out Keene State, 3-0

KEENE, N.H. – Emily Hester '17 tallied two goals, including her fourth game-winning goal of the season, as the 19th-ranked Amherst women's soccer team shut out non-conference opponent Keene State 3-0 Tuesday night.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
 
  • Play was largely confined to the middle of the field in the first 45 minutes of action, with Amherst and Keene State combining for only four shots on goal in the first half.  
  • Junior midfielder Emily Hester notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season to give Amherst a 1-0 lead just over 16 minutes into the first period. McNamara and Megan Kim '16 assisted on the play.
  • After nearly 50 minutes of scoreless action the Purple & White took advantage of back-to-back opportunities to score two goals in the span of 35 seconds and take a 3-0 lead.
  • Maeve McNamara '19 tallied her third goal of the year in the 62nd minute, volleying the rebound from first-year Eden Charles' header into the back of the net from point-blank range.
  • Hester added her second of the game and Amherst's final insurance tally at the 63:20-mark, after Ashlyn Heller '17 sent a pass from just inside midfield between two defenders and to the feet of the streaking Hester near the penalty hash.
  • The Purple & White held a decisive 8-2 edge in corner kicks and 19-7 edge in shots.
  • Netminder Holly Burwick '16 registered three saves in 78:35 minutes between the pipes for Amherst, while Chelsea Cutler '19 saw just over 11 minutes of action in a relief effort. Charles took a game-high two shots on net.
  • Owl goaltender Danielle Warhall made four saves in the losing effort, while Taylor Farland took a team-high four shots in the outing.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Hester's score marks her fourth game-winning goal of the season for the Purple & White, a number that ties her for second overall in the NESCAC.
  • First facing off in 2009, tonight's matchup marked the seventh game between the sides with Amherst holding a 6-1 advantage in the series.
  • Amherst has outscored opponents 18-6 through 10 games this season with four shutout wins.

  • The Purple & White return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they take on Colby College in Waterville, Maine beginning at 11 a.m.
  • The Owls travel to Northampton, Mass. on Oct. 15 to play Smith College at 4 p.m.
