Salem, Mass. -- Allison Vellucci
(Northville, MI) recorded 10 kills as she led the Vikings of Salem
State to a three-game sweep over the Buccaneers of Massachusetts
Maritime Academy (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) on Tuesday evening at Twohig
Gymnasium. The win enhances Salem State's record to 5-13 and 2-2 in the
Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Buccaneers drop
to 4-15 and 0-3 in the MASCAC.
The Vikings' attack dominated
Massachusetts Maritime in the first set, recording double the amount of
kills the Buccaneers had with 12. Emily Peay
(Lebanon, CT) contributed heavily for Salem State as she tallied nine
kills on the night. However, in set two, Salem State ran into trouble as
they surrendered a six-point lead late in the set, allowing Mass
Maritime to comeback. Despite their late efforts, the Buccaneers were
unable to stop Salem State's front three as Peay pushed the Vikings past
the Bucs.
In the third, Salem State completed the sweep as they
cruised past the Buccaneers 25-19 including a 5-0 run midway through,
led by Jerika Santiago
(Methuen, MA) who tallied three kills during that run. Despite being
swept, Charleen Klangos (Lowell, MA) carried her team with 10 kills as
the rest of the team only combined for seven. Emily Calnan (Hingham, MA)
recorded five aces while Stephanie O'Connor (Westwood, MA) finished
with 15 digs. Emma Ethier (Norton, MA) contributed 15 assists for Mass
Maritime.
Mackenzie Salls (Turner Falls, MA) posted an impressive 20 assists in the win while Santiago, Peay and Kaleena Kara (Douglas, MA) combined for 24 digs.
The
Vikings will take the court again on October 17th when they travel to
SUNY-Delhi for a tri-meet with MCLA beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Bucs
will resume action on the 17th as well when they host Worcester State
for a double-header beginning at 11:00 a.m.
