Springfield, Mass. - Despite seven saves from senior goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.), the Springfield College field hockey program fell to Mount Holyoke, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
With the loss, Springfield falls to 5-6 on the season, and 1-3 in the
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while the
Lyons improve to 7-5 overall, and 2-2 in league play. Mount Holyoke out
shot the Pride, 11-6 over the course of 70 minutes, while both sides
registered six penalty corners in the match.
Springfield's Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.)
tallied a pair of shots in the game. For the Lyons, junior goalkeeper
Liz Decesare (Westford, Mass.) finished the game with a pair of saves,
while Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.) and Charlotte Wagner (West
Chester, Pa.) both notched three shots in the contest.
Mount Holyoke recorded the game's lone goal with 10:18 remaining in
the first half, when Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) slid a
pass across the goal mouth to an open Colby Newsham (Harvard, Mass.),
who then found the back of the net to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead.
Though it was back-and-forth play for the remainder of the contest,
Springfield was not able to break the shutout, as the Lyons escaped with
the one-goal win.
Up next, Springfield will host Trinity on Tuesday, October 13 at 6 p.m.
