HADLEY, Mass. – Junior inside linebacker Evan Boynton
of the Amherst College football team was named the NESCAC Defensive
Player of the Week Sunday for his stellar performance in a 24-7 victory
over rival Middlebury College this weekend.
Boynton was instrumental in the win Saturday with a game and
career-high 12 tackles (7 solo). The junior also sacked the quarterback
twice for a total loss of 21 yards, and intercepted the 2014 NESCAC
Co-Offensive Player of the Year Matt Milano late in the fourth quarter
to help seal the win.
The Concord, Mass. native was all over the field, and his performance
helped Amherst hold the league's top passing attack to 249 yards. Prior
to the game, Middlebury was averaging 336 yards through the air.
Amherst also held the Panthers to seven points, and a mere 21 yards
rushing.
Through three games, Boynton has 24 total tackles (14 solo) and ranks
tied for fifth in the conference. The junior also ranks second in the
NESCAC in sacks with 3.5 for a loss of 32 yards – a league-high.
Amherst returns to the field Saturday, Oct. 17 for a road game against Colby (0-3). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
