MEDFORD – The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has named Tufts freshman Ethan Schreier as its Men's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week.
Over the course of five sessions at the MIT Winter Invitational this past weekend, Schreier raced 13 times highlighted by many personal bests and two team records. His efforts helped the Jumbos finish as the runner-up team at the meet.
Schreier's lead-off time in the 800 freestyle relay (1:39.55) on Friday broke Tufts NCAA champion Roger Gu's previous 200 free school record from 2019 (1:39.75). The Jumbos were second in the race (6:42.42). Then his 200 butterfly winning time (1:48.29) on Saturday established a new Jumbo standard
previously held by James McElduff (1:49.31 from 2018). Schreier's marks were both NCAA B cuts.He also swam lifetime bests in the 100 backstroke (51.47), 100 butterfly (48.84) and 200 individual medley (1:52.00). He was third at the meet in the 100 fly and 200 IM, and recorded NCAA B cuts in both. He also produced lifetime best splits in the 200 medley relay (21.78 butterfly leg) and 400 medley relay (48.50). Jumbo foursomes were second in both of those races.
All the relays he was a part of swam NCAA B cut standards, including the 400 freestyle foursome in which Tufts was again second place with a 3:01.76 mark.
Following the canceled 2020-21 season, Schreier is the first Jumbo to win this award since Tar Tar Jarusinchai was honored on January 20, 2020. Schreier is the first Tufts freshman competitor to receive NESCAC Player of the Week since Joseph Kim on December 3, 2018.
