MEDFORD – For the second time this season, a Tufts University men's squash player has been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week as junior Kunal Valia was announced as the recipient today.
Valia came back from 2-1 down to win against Alec Spiro from Bates College at the No. 2 position to help the Jumbos secure a 7-2 victory over the Bobcats on Friday. After winning the first game 14-12, Valia dropped the next two 11-6 and 11-8. He rallied to win the match with 11-8 and 11-7 scores.
The victory marked the Jumbos' first win over Bates in more than 25 years. Tufts hadn't won as many as three individual matches against the Bobcats since 2007. Head coach Joe Raho's much-improved Jumbos did come into Friday's match with a higher national ranking than the Bobcats at #18 compared to #25 for Bates.
Kunal and the Jumbos also faced #2 in the nation Harvard University at Tufts Squash Center last week, with Kunal playing in the #2 position.
Kunal is currently undefeated in the NESCAC with wins over Connecticut College, Hamilton and Bates. He follows teammate Harry Charlton, who was NESCAC's Player of the Week on November 22.
