Baker-Polito Administration Announces $3 Million MassWorks Award for Douglas

Key infrastructure upgrades will leverage $147 million in private investment, create approximately 800 new jobs


DOUGLAS — Today, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito was joined by state and local officials to announce a $3 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program award to the town of Douglas.  The grant will support water and sewer upgrades for the system that serves the towns of Douglas, Sutton, and Uxbridge.  The upgrades are critical to the advancement of two warehouse developments that will be constructed as a result of $147 million in private investment and are expected to support the creation of approximately 800 new jobs.  Also today, Lt. Elie Earns Undergraduate Research Award in Sports Medicine

WESTFIELD, Mass.—Westfield State University senior volleyball hitter Olivia Elie received an Undergraduate Research Experience Award from the New England chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NEACSM). The movement science major from Rockland, Mass., received the award for her study of treadmill walking. 

Elie researched the mechanics of split-belt treadmill walking, when a person walks simultaneously on two treadmill belts that are moving at different speeds. This act has the potential to correct asymmetric walking in clinical populations like amputees; however, this process and its inner workings are not fully understood by experts.

Isakoff Receives NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Weekly Honor

MEDFORD – Tufts University junior Katelin Isakoff has been selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Women's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week.

Isakoff played an active role in Tufts winning the seven-team MIT Winter Invitational over the weekend. She swam in 11 races over the course of five sessions (preliminaries and finals).

On Friday Isakoff swam the lead leg of the 800 freestyle relay that won with a 7:27.76 mark, which is an NCAA B cut. Her 1:50.91 200 freestyle leading off the 800 free relay was a lifetime best and also an NCAA B cut.

Isakoff was runner-up in the 200 butterfly with a 2:03.57 time that was also a lifetime best and NCAA B cut. She swam to another second-place finish in the 500 freestyle with another lifetime best and NCAA B mark (4:58.12). In the 100 freestyle on Sunday she posted another second at the meet with a lifetime best of 52.17 seconds.

In the 400 freestyle relay that finished the meet, Isakoff swam the second leg as the Jumbos won with a NCAA B cut of 3:27.16. She was also a part of Tufts' 400 medley relay that was fourth at the meet, and the 200 freestyle relay that placed sixth.

Considering the canceled 2020-21 season, this is Tufts' first NESCAC weekly honor since Abby Claus was recognized on December 9, 2019. The recognition is the first for Isakoff.

Freshman Ethan Schreier Wins NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Honor


MEDFORD – The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has named Tufts freshman Ethan Schreier as its Men's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week.

Over the course of five sessions at the MIT Winter Invitational this past weekend, Schreier raced 13 times highlighted by many personal bests and two team records. His efforts helped the Jumbos finish as the runner-up team at the meet.

Schreier's lead-off time in the 800 freestyle relay (1:39.55) on Friday broke Tufts NCAA champion Roger Gu's previous 200 free school record from 2019 (1:39.75). The Jumbos were second in the race (6:42.42). Then his 200 butterfly winning time (1:48.29) on Saturday established a new Jumbo standard

Valia is Men's Squash's Second NESCAC Player of the Week This Season

MEDFORD – For the second time this season, a Tufts University men's squash player has been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week as junior Kunal Valia was announced as the recipient today.

Valia came back from 2-1 down to win against Alec Spiro from Bates College at the No. 2 position to help the Jumbos secure a 7-2 victory over the Bobcats on Friday. After winning the first game 14-12, Valia dropped the next two 11-6 and 11-8. He rallied to win the match with 11-8 and 11-7 scores.

The victory marked the Jumbos' first win over Bates in more than 25 years. Tufts hadn't won as many as three individual matches against the Bobcats since 2007. Head coach Joe Raho's much-improved Jumbos did come into Friday's match with a higher national ranking than the Bobcats at #18 compared to #25 for Bates.

Kunal and the Jumbos also faced #2 in the nation Harvard University at Tufts Squash Center last week, with Kunal playing in the #2 position.

Kunal is currently undefeated in the NESCAC with wins over Connecticut College, Hamilton and Bates. He follows teammate Harry Charlton, who was NESCAC's Player of the Week on November 22.

AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently published the results of a study that is the first to take a process-based modeling approach to understand how much CO2 rivers and streams contribute to the atmosphere. The team focused on the East River watershed in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, and found that their new approach is far more accurate than traditional approaches, which overestimated CO2 emissions by up to a factor of 12. An early online version of the research was recently published by Global Biogeochemical Cycles.

NETA Opens 3rd Retail Store in Franklin, MA

FRANKLIN, Mass., Dec. 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- New England Treatment Access (NETA) announced today that the cannabis company will be formally opening its 3rd retail store in Franklin, MA on Saturday, December 4th, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. The 10,000 square foot space, which includes retail, warehouse, and offices, is located at 162 Grove St.  Franklin is also home to NETA's cultivation and processing facility and the company's headquarters, both located on Forge Parkway.

Pete Farwell to Retire from Williams at the End of June, 2023

WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. – Head Williams men's and women's cross country coach and men's and women's assistant track and field coach Pete Farwell has announced that next fall's 2022 cross country season will be his last season actively coaching at Williams. He will not officially coach in indoor and outdoor track and field, though will do some volunteer helping at home track meets and occasional practices.
 
Farwell is a 1973 graduate of Williams, where he competed in cross country, indoor and outdoor track all four years. Maple Center Shopping Plaza Fire Investigation Update

Investigation still active, but no signs of foul play
