Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team suffered a tough 3-2 setback to Colby-Sawyer this afternoon in non-conference action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Colby=Sawyer grabbed the lead 3:33 into the opening quarter as junior Bella Silva (Danvers, Mass.) inserted a ball off a corner to classmate Madison Quick (Windsor, N.Y.), who fired a shot far side for her first tally on the season for the 1-0 edge.


Fitchburg State knotted the score at 1-1 in the tenth minute of play with freshman Alexis Raymond (Tewksbury, Mass.) collecting a through pass from sophomore Joyce Arbia (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) and deposited a shot inside the far post for her first collegiate tally.


The Green and Gold took the lead at the 19:16 when senior Sarah Craig (Ashburnham, Mass.) fired a shot on frame that Raymond redirected before sophomore Jessica Morse (Leominster, Mass.) was able to bat into the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal to make the score 2-1 going into the break.


Following the intermission, the Chargers retied the contest (2-2) with 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter with freshman Courtney Larson (Auburn, Mass.) settling a rebound of her own shot and struck for her team-leading third goal of the 2021 campaign.


The visitors nearly regained the lead midway through the fourth quarter as junior Callie Sorenson (Sandwich, Mass.) put a shot on target, but sophomore Emma Ganley (Auburn, Mass.) was able to clear the ball off the goal line.


The Chargers secured the victory with just four second left in regulation when junior Aoife Daly (Harwich, Mass.) redirected an initial shot by Sorenson and into the back of the net for her third goal on the year, resulting in the 3-2 final.


Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest marked the fifth meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons 3-2-0 all time when taking on the Chargers


Fitchburg State had won three of the first four matchups with Colby-Sawyer, including a 4-2 decision in the last meeting on September 4, 2019 at Veitch Field.


Colby-Sawyer finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots, while also holding a slim 5-4 edge in penalty corners


Sophomore Jenna Morse (Leominster, Mass.) made ten saves for the Falcons

Junior Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) stopped one shot for the Charges

Morse and Raymond netted their first collegiate goals for the Green and Gold
