Brown notches game-best 14 tackles for Green and Gold

Buzzards Bay, Mass.– The Fitchburg State University football team dropped a 28-0 decision to the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Clean Harbors Stadium.

How It Happened

Mass. Maritime broke a 0-0 stalemate with five minutes remaining in the second quarter as sophomore running back Jonah Mitchell (Sanford, Fla.) broke a 39 yard run for a touchdown to give the hosts a 7-0 edge going into the break.


Following the intermission, the Buccaneers doubled their lead early in the third quarter when senior defensive back Cobey Williamson (North Easton, Mass.) returned an interception 29 yards into the end zone for the 14-0 advantage.


Mass. Maritime extended its lead (21-0) at the 6:14 mark of the third quarter when sophomore wide out Andrew Brightman (Wareham, Mass.) hauled in an 11 yard strike from senior Curtis Cann (Easton, Mass.).


The Buccaneers secured the victory with 7:09 left in the contest as freshman quarterback Colbe Andrews (Old Lyme, Conn.) ran it inn from 30 yards out, capping a five play, 61 yard drive, resulting in the 28-0 final.


Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest marks 35th matchup between the Falcons and the Buccaneers on the Gridiron with Fitchburg State 15-20 all-time when taking on Mass. Maritime


Offensively for the Falcons, junior Frank Sims, IV (Peabody, Mass.) ran for 53 yards on 20 carries, while senior Timothy O'Neill (Ashby, Mass.) hauled in one pass for 24 yards.


For the Buccaneers, Mitchell finished with 59 rushing yards on eight attempts and one touchdown, while Andrews chipped in with 56 yards on five rushes and one score.


Defensively, freshman linebacker Michael Brown (San Antonio, Tex.) led the way for the Green and Gold with 14 tackles on nine solo stops and five assisted tackles as well as one sack and 2.5 TFL's, while senior Joel Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) added five solo tackles and one TFL.


For Mass. Maritime, sophomore linebacker Nicholas Ford (Jackson, N.J.) collected seven tackles on three solo tackles and four assisted stops to go along with 0.5 TFL's, while classmate Chris O'Brien (Scituate, Mass.) made seven tackles (six solo, one assist) and 1.5 TFL's.
