WORCESTER, Mass.—Sophomore Gizem Yilmaz
(Istanbul, Turkey) finished with six kills, six service aces, seven
digs and a career-high nine blocks to help visiting Babson College sweep
WPI, 25-19, 25-18, 25-11, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic
Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Tuesday night at
Harrington Auditorium.
With the win, Babson is now 9-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while WPI slips to 14-4 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) hit .381 and led all players with 10 kills, while
first-year Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed 19 assists, seven digs and four blocks for the Beavers. Senior Jenny Karnes (Houston, Texas) added six kills, first-year Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) chipped in with five kills and sophomore Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) finished with a match-high 12 digs in the win.
Sophomore Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.), who finished with a team-high
nine digs, and senior Maddy Werth (Bedford, Mass.) each recorded five
kills, while classmate Shay Feeley (Franklin, Mass.) dished out 12
assists for the Engineers.
The Green and White opened the match by scoring 11 of the first 15
points, including kills by Karnes and Carosotto, and aces from Yilmaz
and sophomore Sarah Zazyczny
(Nanuet, N.Y.). WPI pulled within a point on two occasions, the last
coming at 18-17, but Babson went on to close out the set with a 7-2 run
punctuated by back-to-back aces by senior Lorraine Mackiewicz (Edison, N.J.).
The teams split the first 10 points of the second set before the
Beavers ripped off a 9-2 run that featured three kills apiece from
Roseen and Yilmaz. Trailing by as many as nine at 17-8, the Engineers
got within four three times only to see Roseen and Zazyczny finish off
the frame with late kills.
WPI scored the first two points of the third only to see Babson counter
with five straight points to take the final lead of the evening. The
Green and White later scored nine straight points on the serve of
Mackiewicz, including a pair of aces to build a 19-7 advantage. The
Engineers scored four of the next five points, but Yilmaz ended the run
with a kill and then capped the match with back-to-back aces.
Both teams return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Emerson, while WPI visits Smith.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are 29-11 all-time against WPI and have won 11 of their last 14 matches against the Engineers.
• Babson's 11 total blocks on Tuesday night were a season high and
helped the team improve to 16-4 over the last two years when recording
eight or more blocks.
• The Beavers hit .236 against WPI and are now 7-0 this season and
27-1 over the last two years when hitting better than .200.
• Eight of Babson's nine wins this fall have come in three sets.
