AMHERST, Mass. -
Four different players scored goals as the UMass women's soccer team
defeated Davidson 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. The
Minutewomen notched a pair of goals in each half to post their largest
offensive outburst of the season.
The win improved UMass to 5-5-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Atlantic 10 action,
while Davidson fell to 5-9-0 and 1-4-0 in league action. With the win,
the Minutewomen pick up three points giving them seven total in the A-10
standings. UMass will host Rhode Island on Sunday at Rudd Field (1
p.m.). The match will be the annual Think Pink Game for the Minutewomen
in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month with fans encouraged to wear
pink.
In Thursday's action, Megan Burke put UMass on the scoreboard first with her team-leading third
goal of the season. She took a short cross from Jackie Bruno re-directing a shot inside the right post in the 17th minute of play.
In the 44th minute, Rebekka Sverrisdottir put the Minutewomen up 2-0 as
she crashed the back post on a corner kick from the right flag.
In the second half, Alyssa Fratarcangeli
notched her second goal of the season when she put home deflection off
the near post in the 72nd minute. Her goal was set-up after Burke was
awarded a penalty kick following a Davidson foul inside the 18-yard box.
Her shot was saved by Wildcats keeper Becca Ravitz, but the ball
caromed off her hands. Julia Weithofer attempted a rebound shot which hit the right post before landing at Fratarcangeli's foot for the tap-in goal.
