WENHAM, Mass.—Western New England's Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.)
scored two goals to lead the Golden Bears to a 2-0 victory over Gordon
in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action on Wednesday night.
The
Fighting Scots drop their second consecutive game following a
three-match win streak and fall to 5-10 overall. Gordon surrendered two
goals against a conference foe for only the second time this season and
drops a half game behind the Golden Bears in the CCC standings at 3-5.
Western New England improves to 6-6 and 3-4 in the conference.
Gordon
controlled the pace over the first 20 minutes by keeping the Golden
Bears from getting too deep into its defensive end. The Fighting Scots
registered the first five shots of the game, all on frame, but Grace
Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) made several big stops to keep Gordon out of the
pine.
Western New England scored on its first attempt of the
night on a shot from DeLima. The sophomore took the ball away from a
defender and hit one past Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) for the
lead in the 25th minute.
The goal sent the Golden
Bears on a frenzy, as they put up four penalty corners and three shots
over the final 10 minutes of the first half, but to no avail.
Gordon
had several good chances to knot things up early in the second half,
but close calls went against the Fighting Scots. Twice the Scots were
unable to tap in a ball at the back post and shots sailed just wide.
DeLima struck again in the 56th minute when freshman Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) found her teammate wide for the tap in.
The Fighting Scots fought for two penalty corners with 12 minutes remaining, but could not manage a shot.
Gordon
will look to rebound on Saturday when Salve Regina comes to town for a
12:30 p.m. start. Western New England returns home for UNE on Saturday
at 1 p.m.
