BOSTON – In its final non-conference game of 2015, Harvard women's soccer used a pair of second-half goals to push past Boston University, 2-1, Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
Rachel Garcia tallied the game-winning goal in the 64th minute, finding the back of the net from 25 yards away. The score was her second of the season. Four minutes before Garcia's strike, Margaret Purce recorded her sixth goal of the season. Garcia was credited with the assist. Danielle Etzel picked up her first-career win in goal, making one save in a blemish-free second half.
Harvard (5-6-1) outshot Boston University (5-5-3) 14-13, but the Terriers struck first in the ninth minute after Christina Wakefield headed home a free kick from Rachel Bloznalis.
The Crimson offense came alive in the second period, where it tallied 12 of its 14 shots. At 59:01, Garcia found Purce for her finish, where she beat the goalkeeper one-on-one and finished into the left side of the goal.
The game-winner came just under five minutes later when Garcia's long-range attempt made its way past the goalie. The Crimson quashed every comeback attempt by the Terriers, holding them without a shot over the final 24 minutes.
Harvard women's soccer travels to Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The contest can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
