Wright records quality start but Sox drop finale

By Ian Browne and Alykhan Ravjiani / MLB.com
TORONTO -- Right-hander Marco Estrada helped the Blue Jays avoid being swept by Boston for the first time since 2011 after he tossed seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre.

Toronto was in danger of being swept by the Red Sox in a series of three games or more for the first time since June 10-12, 2011. Instead, Estrada snapped the Blue Jays' four-game losing streak after he allowed five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.

Boston right-hander Steven Wright was the tough-luck loser, giving up just two runs (one earned) on five hits over his 6 2/3 innings, but the Red Sox's offense was unable to provide him any run support, recording just seven hits against Blue Jays pitching.

Trio of homers can't lift Red Sox past Indians

CLEVELAND -- If the Indians reach the postseason, their path will likely need to be paved by strong pitching and stellar defense. And they certainly won't mind if the offense also pulls its weight, as was the case in Wednesday's 7-6 victory over the Red Sox at Progressive Field.

Carlos Santana and Mike Napoli delivered towering home runs at critical points, helping power the Tribe to its first win of 2016. Santana launched a three-run shot off Clay Buchholz to cap a four-run outburst in the first inning and Napoli crushed a pitch from Junichi Tazawa to put Cleveland ahead for good in the seventh.

"It's a really good win," Napoli said. "They make the comeback, take the lead, and we were able to scrap away that run to tie the game and you know, ultimately I hit that homer to take the lead. So, great team win overall."

"Yeah, I was trying to bounce it," Tazawa said. "I was able to get a swing-and-miss at previous

Boston Red Sox: Papi's blast backs Price's 10 K's in opening win

CLEVELAND -- In search of an ace, the Red Sox invested heavily in David Price this winter. In an Opening Day outing opposite Indians righty Corey Kluber on Tuesday, Price once again showed his worth in guiding Boston to a 6-2 victory over the Tribe.

David Ortiz also began his farewell tour by launching the 504th home run of his career.

Backed by a strong day by outfielder Mookie Betts, who belted a home run to kick off his encore to last year's breakout campaign, Price piled up 10 strikeouts en route to his first win of the season. Pitching in extremely cold temperatures, the Boston lefty limited Cleveland to two runs on five hits in a 103-pitch performance.

World Series Off To Strong Start

Building off the momentum from a Postseason that saw TV ratings increase for every round, Game 1 of the World Series delivered a significant audience on television and dominated the conversation on social media, topping all competition in both areas by a wide margin.
Game 1 drew 14.4 million viewers, up +18% over Game 1 in 2012 and ranking as the most watched World Series opener since 2010, despite the lopsided victory by the Red Sox. The game drew an 8.6fast national rating according to Nielsen, leading FOX to an easy win in primetime and topping the second place network by +37% in the metered markets. Viewership peaked during the second inning with 16.9 million viewers before the Red Sox pulled away.
In Boston, the game drew a 39.7 rating, the highest mark for a Red Sox game since Game 7 of the 2008 ALCS. In St. Louis, the game drew a 36.0 rating, best for any Cardinals game since Game 6 of the 2012 NLCS. In both markets, the rating peaked early in the game before the score became lopsided.
The game was also the most talked about television program all day on Wednesday by a very wide margin. There will be a special pre-game ceremony recognizing three living Medal of Honor recipients, including Salvatore Giunta (Medal of Honor received November 16, 2010), Clinton Romesha (Medal of Honor received February 11, 2013) and William Swenson (Medal of Honor received October 15, 2013). Hall of Famer and Boston Red Sox Legend Carl Yastrzemski will join these men on the field for the ceremonial first pitch. The pre-game will also include iconic Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist Mary J. Blige performing the National Anthem. Game One of the 109th Fall Classic between the American League Champion Boston Red Sox and the National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals airs on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

WELCOME BACK VETERANS: Launched in 2008, Major League Baseball and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation have committed more than $28 million to Welcome Back Veterans (WelcomeBackVeterans.org). The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program is supported by Welcome Back Veterans.

BANK OF AMERICA SUPPORT: Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, will provide American flags for fans at each Fenway Park entrance, and asks those in attendance to wave the flag during God Bless America (before the bottom of the 7th inning) as an expression of thanks to our troops. Bank of America will donate $1 on behalf of each participating fan to Welcome Back Veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project in an effort to reach a total donation of $1 million, which will go toward helping service members and veterans succeed here at home. Bank of America's "Express Your Thanks" initiative, which re-launched on Memorial Day 2013, aims to help support members of the military and veterans across the country by donating $1 for each expression of thanks. Fans can visit BankofAmerica.com/troopthanks to learn more about this program and how they can express their thanks.
