WENHAM, Mass.— Gordon Women's Tennis concluded its most successful
regular season in recent memory on Saturday and raked in plenty of
Commonwealth Coast Conference awards because of it. Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.), Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.), Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Katherine Jeffreys
(Parkton, Md.) all earned at least one honor, while head coach Peter
Amadon was named conference Coach of the Year for the first time during
his tenure.
Denney and Hanson were both named CCC First Team
Singles after going a combined 12-1 during their conference slate.
Denney accounted for the lone loss in her final match of the season
against CCC Player of the Year Hayley Barnett. Hanson has yet to lose a
singles match this season, going 8-0 between the first and second
flights. Denney dropped the first two matches of her young career, but
had rattled off eight consecutive wins during Gordon's long winning
streak until the match at Endicott.
With Barnett taking the
Player of the Year award, Denney finished with the second best record at
No.
1 singles and was named CCC Rookie of the Year.
Yeaw
finishes off her final conference season in Wenham with perhaps her best
year to date. The senior has yet to drop a match in either singles or
doubles in head-to-head play. She is the only conference player to be
undefeated at the No. 3 flight this season and is 10-0 combined between
two and three singles. Despite her impressive record, Yeaw was only
named to the second team this fall.
Denney and Yeaw teamed up to
earn the best doubles record in Gordon history for a fall season.
Gordon's top double lineup won all nine matches in which they played and
went 6-0 in the CCC, which earned them the distinction of First Team
Doubles. Yeaw also went 1-0 at second doubles with Lily Drescher during
Gordon's senior day match.
A lineup shakeup in the middle of the
season allowed Hanson and Jeffreys to get an appearance on the Second
Team. The freshman-sophomore combo went 5-1 after joining forces and
their only loss was attributed to first-team members Barnett and Margot
Andreasen from Endicott. Jeffreys also went 8-2 in singles play and 5-1
in the conference.
After years of steady improvement Gordon's
headman, Amadon, finally took home a conference Coach of the Year award.
The long-time men's coach is in his fourth year at the helm of the
women's program and earned his first playoff bye in either program. A
2004 Gordon graduate and a former all-CCC selection as a player, Amadon
is being recognized by his peers for the first time as CCC Coach of the
Year. Under Amadon's direction, the Fighting Scots enter the upcoming
CCC Championship as the number two seed, sporting a 10-2 overall record
and an impressive 7-1 mark in conference play. The Amadon-led Fighting
Scots enter the upcoming conference tournament having registered
double-digit wins for three straight years, following a stretch in which
Gordon last reached the 10-win plateau in 2005.
Off the court,
Yeaw added to Gordon's hardware for her work in the classroom as the CCC
Senior Scholar Athlete. Combined with her near perfection on the court
this season, Yeaw sports an equally impressive 3.78 grade-point average
in elementary education and history. She is seeking dual licensure with
elementary education and ESL. She has been a two-year captain and has
consistently been named to a plethora of the general collegiate awards
lists for academics and athletics in her three years at Gordon.
Gordon awaits their semifinal matchup depending on results of Tuesday's first round.
