BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College fought its way to a
2-1 lead after doubles and then won five of six singles matches en
route to a 7-2 victory over visiting Wellesley College in New England
Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on
Saturday afternoon at Farwell Courts.
With the win, Babson is now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Wellesley drops to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomores Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) staked the Beavers to an early lead with an 8-3 triumph at number one doubles, and first-years Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) and Chloe Brandt
(Denver, Colo) followed with an 8-6 win at number three. The Blue got
on the board at number two as juniors Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and
Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) defeated senior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) and junior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.), 9-7.
Akgul rolled to a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Stojkovic at number one
singles, Weick stayed unbeaten with a 6-4, 6-1 win over first-year
Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) at number five, and Quenard clinched the
match with a 7-5, 6-2 result at number three. Gianelos was also a 7-5,
6-2 winner at number two, while Brandt posted a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 triumph
at number six.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Wheaton at 3:30 p.m., while the Blue take on Emerson at 5 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers have now posted back-to-back wins against
Wellesley for the first time since consecutive 5-4 wins in 2002 and
2003.
• With the victory, Babson has clinched a spot in the six-team NEWMAC Tournament, which begins on October 21.
• Akgul is now 6-0 all-time in dual-match play against the Blue.
• The Beavers have won four straight matches and eight of their last 10 in the month of October.
