Women's Soccer Tops Wellesley, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The MIT women's soccer team defeated Wellesley College, 1-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at the Blue's Outdoor Field Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

MIT freshman Allie Hrabchak (Princeton, N.J.) registered her team leading, eighth goal of the season with 2:42 left to play on the first half clock, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) stopped four shots to help the Engineers improve to 8-5-2 and 5-1-0 in the conference.

After Hrabchak fired a shot that was saved by Wellesley goalkeeper Kat Goldsmith (Armonk, N.Y.), the freshman gathered her own rebound and put the ball into the back of the net, giving the Cardinal and Gray a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Hrabchak nearly got MIT on the board seven minutes earlier when she took a shot at net, but it was blocked down by Blue junior Gabby (La Jolla, Calif.), who was credited for the team's save. Hrabchak picked up the ball off of the deflection and shot it again, this time it was saved by Goldsmith, preserving the shutout.

The Engineers concluded the first half with a 7-4 margin in shots, including two on goal. Through the first 45 minutes, MIT also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. In the second half, the Cardinal and Gray tallied seven more shots, totaling 14 to Wellesley's seven on the afternoon.

Goldsmith ended the day with nine saves for the hosts, four of which came in the second half.

Wellesley upped the pressure early in the second half, with Ullmann stopping a pair of shots early in the stanza, keeping the Blue out of the scoring column. The hosts had one more chance to even the game at 70:27 mark, but the attempt came up just short as Kelly Hoover's (Austin, Texas) shot trickled wide

MIT (8-5-2, 5-1-0 NEWMAC) travels to Smith College for a conference tilt on Saturday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m., while Wellesley (5-5-2, 0-4-1 NEWMAC) heads to WPI for a league matchup the same day with kick off slated for 1:00 p.m.
