Williams will host the inaugural NESCAC Women's Golf Championship at
Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts this weekend in
conjunction with the Williams Fall Invitational. The first round starts
at noon on Saturday, October 10 with a shotgun start and play continuing
on Sunday, October 11 at 9:00 a.m. Previously, a NESCAC "Tournament"
was held each fall, but this year an official NESCAC Champion will be
crowned.
The host Ephs have been on a roll this fall, winning all three
tournaments they have competed in so far this season. Williams, which is
fresh off capturing the program's first NCAA Women's Golf Championship
last spring, boasts a deep squad that has produced different first-place
finishers at each tournament. Junior Sophie Kitchen started the year by
winning the NYU Invitational with a two-day score of 146 to help the
Ephs defeat host NYU by seven strokes with a team score of 614. At the
Mount Holyoke Invitational the following week, Williams set a new school
record by posting a 36-hole score of 605 following the team's first
sub-300 round in program history (297). First-year Cordelia Chan earned
medalist honors after carding a two-round score of 145. She also
established a new team single-round record by firing a 68 on the second
day of the tournament. Last weekend at the Middlebury Invitational,
sophomores Phoebe Mattana and Elizabeth Gudas were two of four golfers
to post matching rounds of 160 at the top of the leaderboard. Mattana
had also placed second at the NYU Invitational (150) and the Mount
Holyoke Invitational (148).
Amherst has emerged as one of the top contenders to take the
conference crown as well. The Jeffs are
coming off their best showing of
the season with a second-place finish at the Middlebury Invitational
where they posted a 36-hole score of 656. Senior Devyn Gardnerled the
charge, tying for first place with a score of 160. In its first
tournament of the fall, Amherst took fourth place at the NYU
Invitational (642), where first-year Kate Weiss was the top Jeff
finisher. She posted a two-day score of 156 to tie for eighth place
individually. Amherst also finished fourth at the Mount Holyoke
Invitational with a score of 651 over two rounds. Weiss again paced the
Jeffs, as she carded a 36-hole score of 154 to finish in a tie for
second place.
Middlebury has turned impressive results of its own this fall. The
Panthers placed fifth at the NYU Invitational (659), third at the Mount
Holyoke Invitational (646) and third at its own tournament (668) last
weekend. Katharine Fortin
has consistently been Middlebury's top performer so far this season.
The sophomore took sixth place at the NYU Invitational following a
two-day score of 154, tied for tenth place at the Mount Holyoke
Invitational with a two-round score of 160 and turned in her best finish
of the season at the Middlebury Invitational, where she tied for first
place (160).
Hamilton has also had success this season, winning the one-day SUNY
Cobleskill Invitational with a team score of 347 and taking second place
at the two-day Le Moyne Invitational (684). The Continentals also
placed fifth at the St. Lawrence Invitational with a 36-hole score of
683. First-year Electra Washburn provided an instant spark to the team,
posting a program-record 75 on the first day of the St. Lawrence
Invitational en route to finishing tied for eighth overall (159). She
also took medalist honors at the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational after
finishing with a round of 83, and later helped Hamilton defeat Nazareth
with a two-round score of 160. Classmate Libbie Warner was the top
Continental finisher at the Le Moyne Invitational, where she tied for
third with a two-day score of 163.
Bates and Bowdoin round out the teams competing at the NESCAC Women's
Golf Championship this weekend. So far this season, the Bobcats have
edged the Polar Bears in three of the four competitions they have played
head-to-head. Bates defeated Bowdoin in a dual match to open the
season, 351-379, and followed up the performance by winning the Bowdoin
Invitational with a two-day team score of 738. The host Polar Bears
posted a team score of 758. Bates had a tenth-place showing at the Mount
Holyoke Invitational (748) with Bowdoin finishing in 12th place (757).
However, the Polar Bears bested Bates at the Middlebury Invitational
last weekend by seven strokes, as Bowdoin posted a two-round score of
778 for ninth place and Bates finished tenth (785). Bowdoin sophomore
Diya Chopra (Dubai) has been the Polar Bears' top performer during the
last three tournaments, while Bates sophomore Kelly Wasserman
(Middleton, Wis.) has paced the Bobcats in three of their four events
this fall.
Results of the NESCAC Women's Golf Championship will be available at the completion of each day on the NESCAC website.
