CLAREMONT, Calif. – The MIT water polo team, ranked
No. 9 in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) Division
III poll, finished the 2015 Gary Troyer Tournament fourth overall with a
record of 2-2 over the weekend in California.
MIT faced off with four quality opponents in the tournament, as three
were ranked in last week's CWPA Division III poll. Whittier College was
tabbed as No. 1, Johns Hopkins University was No. 2 and Pomona-Pitzer
College was ranked No. 5.
The Engineers opened the tournament with a 13-3 win over Caltech and
an 8-7 victory against
Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, but fell to Whittier and
Johns Hopkins by scores of 9-8 and 16-12, respectively, on Saturday
afternoon.

Sophomore Kyle Archer (Clovis, Calif.) notched five goals over the weekend, while senior Joe Kusters (Coronado, Calif.), junior Zach Churukian (Menlo Park, Calif.) and freshman Nikhil Bhatia (Los Altos, Calif.) all found the back of the net two times. In goal, junior Nolan Kruse (Orcutt, Calif.) made 23 saves over the opening two games for the Engineers.
No. 9 MIT 12, Caltech 3
The Engineers were in complete control of this game from start to
finish, putting four goals on the board in the first quarter, one in the
second, four more in the third and three in the fourth.
As a part of the four goal first quarter, junior Anuj Khandelwal (Severna Park, Md.) notched his first marker of the season, while classmate Kelly McGee (Pasadena, Calif.) also scored his first of the year, that made the score 5-0 at the break.
In the third quarter, Knezevic scored three times, while Bhatia
netted his first collegiate marker pushing MIT's lead to 9-0 after three
periods. Caltech junior Christopher Bradley (Half Moon Bay, Calif.)
netted a pair of goals and freshman Charles Ross (Wexford, Pa.) added
one of his own to account for Caltech's offense in the final quarter. It
wasn't enough as Rogers, Bhatia and senior Samuel Edson (Newport Beach, Calif.) all tallied a single goal towards the MIT victory and the 12-3 final score.
No. 9 MIT 8, No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer 7
With just one second left to play and the score knotted at 7-7,
Rogers fired the game winning goal past Pomona-Pitzer sophomore net
minder Daniel Diemer (St. Louis, Mo.) to give the Engineers the 8-7 win
and a 2-0 record on the opening day of the 2015 Gary Troyer Tournament.
The score was even at 3-3 at halftime, but MIT pulled ahead by a 7-5
margin with four goals in the third quarter. Rogers, Tasman, Orton and
junior Patrick Everett (Ann Arbor, Mich.) accounted for MIT's scoring that pushed the Engineers out in front.
With 6:07 left on the fourth quarter clock, junior Tommy Turner
(Thousand Oaks, Calif.) netted Pomona-Pitzer's sixth goal of the game,
while freshman Adam Ward (Claremont, Calif.) notched the game tying
marker 1:50 later. Rogers came up huge for MIT as time expired, as the
Engineers took down No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer by an 8-7 final score.
No. 1 Whittier 9, No. 9 MIT 8 – DIVISION III SEMIFINALS
MIT faced off against No. 1 Whittier in the Division III Semifinals
on Saturday afternoon. Trailing by a 7-6 score with 6:23 left on the
clock, Archer registered the game tying goal, knotting the game at 7-7.
Whitter junior Marino Fatovic (Dubrovnik, Croatia) pushed the Poets
back out in front, 8-7, with 4:18 to play, while sophomore Massimiliano
Mirarchi (Rome, Italy) scored what proved to be the game winner, two
minutes later making the score 9-7.
Archer pulled the Engineers within one, 9-8, with 1:36 to play, but
Whittier freshman goalkeeper Oliver Bineth (Budapest, Hungary) came up
huge for the top ranked team, as the Poets hung onto the eventual 9-8
victory and a spot in the Division III Championship game.
No. 2 Johns Hopkins 16, No. 9 MIT 12 – DIVISION III THIRD PLACE GAME
Both teams traded goals over the opening quarter as the score was
tied at 5-5 after eight minutes in the pool. Knezevic notched a pair of
markers, while Rogers, Tasman and sophomore Jeremy Bogle (Weston, Mass.) accounted for the rest of MIT's offense in the first stanza.

(9-9), but Johns Hopkins scored four straight to take a 13-9 lead
heading into the final period of play. In the fourth quarter, both teams
scored three times, but the Blue Jays were able to keep pace and hold
on for a 16-12 win to claim third place in the 2015 Gary Troyer
Tournament.
MIT (6-7) travels to Brown University and Connecticut College next
