UMass Rallies Past Colorado College With Four-Goal Third

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Massachusetts hockey erased a 3-0 deficit by scoring three times in a two-minute, seven-second span to open the third period and freshman Austin Plevy added the game winner late in the frame to complete the 4-3 comeback win over Colorado College on Saturday night at Broadmoor World Arena. The win moves the Minutemen to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 0-2-0.

Walsh factored in three of the four goals on the night for UMass with two tallies and one assist for three points, his second multi-point game of the weekend. Plevy notched is fourth goal of his young career with just 3:07 to go in the third period. Freshmen defensemen Callum Fryer and William Lagesson and goaltender Nic Renyard all logged their first collegiate points, chipping in assists on the evening. Renyard made 45 saves and picked up the win in his debut as a Minuteman, as well. Junior Ray Pigozzi also added a pair of helpers for his eighth career multi-point game.

The teams played an even opening period that saw UMass come away with a 11-9 shot advantage,
but no goals on the board for either side.

Colorado College ultimately broke up the scoreless deadlock, 19 seconds into a five-minute power play after Dominic Trento was called for boarding in the second period. Teemu Kivihalme set up Trey Bradley with a shot from the right faceoff circle that tucked inside the left post at the 6:02 mark.
The kill then turned into a 5-on-3 as Ben Gallaher was whistled for cross checking and the Tigers converted once more with a slap shot by David Radke from the high slot at 9:01 from Ben Israel and Sam Rothstein.


In the closing minutes of the second period, Colorado College expanded the margin to 3-0 as Kivihalme carried into the UMass zone and put one past Renyard 18:42 into the stanza.

However, the Minutemen came out of the locker room for the third and quickly erased the deficit.

Walsh started off the scoring for UMass, tucking a slapper underneath the crossbar from the top of the right faceoff circle off an outlet feed from Pigozzi and Ben Gallacher at the 28-second mark of the third period.

The Minutemen capitalized on a power play opportunity 2:17 into the frame as Iacobellis fired a give-and-go from Walsh past goaltender Jacob Nehama that closed the gap to 3-2.

Just 18 seconds later, following a Colorado College timeout, Walsh tied the score at 3-3 by tapping in a cross-ice pass from Pigozzi at the doorstep. Lagesson earned an assist on the play, as well.

Plevy then stuffed home the game-winning goal off a shot from the right point by Fryer at the 16:53 mark with Trenton collecting the secondary assist.

The Tigers ended the night with a 48-38 advantage in shots on goal and went 2-for-3 with the man advantage, while UMass was 1-for-5. The Minutemen won 36 of 69 faceoffs on the evening, a 52.8% clip, led by Iacobellis' stellar 14 for 21 (66.7%) showing over the dots.

UMass will be back in action next Fri., Oct. 16, when the squad will play host to Sacred Heart for it's home opener, set for 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
