Gilbert, Robinson Earn First Career PL Weekly Awards

Senior Richie Robinson was the only one alongside Matt Gilbert to play all 180 minutes in the two shutout wins.
BOSTON - After helping lead the Boston University men's soccer team to a pair of shutout victories, junior Matt Gilbert and senior Richie Robinson have earned their first career Patriot League weekly awards, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Besides topping UMass Lowell, 1-0, in their first meeting since 1981, the Terriers became the first opponent to shut out American (1-0) this season and the first Patriot League team since 2013 to earn a shutout win at Reeves Field.

Gilbert started the week tallying three saves against a River Hawk squad that was sitting at No. 63 in the RPI rankings and had won four of its last five games. He then recorded a season-high eight saves against American for his second clean sheet of the week on Saturday. Battling not only the Eagles but the rain and wind in Saturday’s League contest, the 6-foot-4 Madison, N.J., native made a number of impressive saves, including a leaping stop in the 79th minute, for his first road shutout.

Robinson served as a steadying presence in the back and was the only one besides Gilbert to play all 180 minutes in the two shutouts. A native of Elmont, N.Y., he helped Gilbert defend against 37 shot attempts and 10 corner kicks to improve to 6-2-1 and 1-0-1 in league action.

Monday's announcement now gives the Terriers seven weekly awards this season. Following the two victories, BU has skyrocketed more than 30 spots to No. 60 in the RPI rankings and will next visit No. 92 Colgate on Wednesday (Oct. 7) at 7 p.m.
