Men's Soccer Takes Down No.24 Wheaton, 2-1



Norton, Mass. - October 9, 2021 - The Springfield College men's soccer program captured a 2-1 victory over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon. 


Springfield now holds a 7-4 record on the season

and evens out at 2-2 in conference play. Wheaton, who was ranked 24th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Men's Soccer National Poll, drops to 8-3 and levels out at 2-2 in the NEWMAC. The Lyons out shot the Pride, 15-7. 


Finn Welch (Williamstown, Mass.) and Jack Costa (Rocky Point, N.Y.) each contributed a goal in the victory for the Pride. Costa notched his first goal of the season, while Welch tallied his sixth strike on the year. In net, Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) collected five saves. 


Derick Arhin (South Windsor, Conn.) slipped through the defense and fed Welch, who dialed in the first goal of the game and gave the Pride a 1-0 adavantage in the 22nd-minute. After Thomas Sojka (Bellingham, Mass.) placed a corner kick into the box at 36:54, Costa punted in a strike between defenders and gave Springfield a 2-0 lead. With a few ticks left in the half, Aiden Casinghino (Brimfield, Mass.) gave the Pride a chtance to go up 3-0 with a deep shot, but just narrowly missed to go into the half with a 2-0 edge on Wheaton. 


In 54th-minute, Luke Strange attempted to cut into the Pride lead with a shot on frame, however Knibbs walled up the shot to maintain the 2-0 lead for Springfield. Wheaton would eventually edge into the Springfield lead as a free kick got bobbled around in front of the net and Gabriel Fellows tapped in the score for the Lyons, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Pride. Wheaton would rip a pair of shots on frame in the final minute of the game in hopes of evening the score, but Knibbs walled up the attempts and sealed the Pride's victory. 


Springfield host Coast Guard next Saturday, October 16 at 12pm.
