Salem State Rolls Past Southern Maine 8-1

HAVERHILL, Massachusetts -- The Salem State University Vikings picked up their first win of the season Saturday defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 at the Cedardale Health & Fitness.

            The Vikings improved to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in Little East Conference action.  The Huskies slipped to 2-7 overall and remain winless in six conference matches.

            Junior Kara Weiske (Nobleboro, Maine/Lincoln Academy) won her number five singles match in straight sets over sophomore Melina Mavroforos (Amesbury, Mass.) to earn the lone point for the Huskies.

            Senior April McDermott (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Cassie Morrison (Clinton, Mass.) led the way for the Vikings from the top of the lineup.  The duo combined for an 8-3 win over juniors Katie Quinn (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Liz Martin (Naugatuck, Conn./Woodland Regional).

            McDermott returned to defeat Quinn 6-3, 6-1 in the top singles match, while Morrison got by Martin 6-1, 6-3 at number two.

            Southern Maine is back in action on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Husson University for a non-conference match.  Salem State will entertain the University of Massachusetts Boston for a Little East Conference match on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.).
