NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Opening its Ivy League schedule in the win column, Harvard men's soccer used a pair of second half goals to dart past Yale, 3-1.
The Crimson (2-4-2, 1-0-0 Ivy) outshot the Bulldogs (1-7-0, 0-1-0 Ivy) 12-10, with six shots coming in each half. Jake Freeman tallied the game-winning goal with a diving header in the 63rd minute, and Tim Schmoll slotted an 89th-minute penalty kick into the bottom left corner to secure the victory.
The Bulldogs struck first in the seventh minute to go ahead, 1-0. Archie Kinnane's corner kick found Henry Albrecht, who tapped the ball to Nicky Downs for a 20-yard shot that made its way into the upper corner.
Seven minutes later, Yale put the ball into its own net after a miscommunication between the central defender and the goalkeeper. Oliver White supplied the pressure on the play, and the own goal evened the score at 2-2.
Freeman tallied his team-leading third goal of the season at 62:17 after his diving header sailed over the goaltender's left shoulder. Michael Klain tallied his third assist of the year on the play after delivering the cross to Freeman.
With 1:32 left to play, a Yale defender fouled White inside the penalty area, taking him down before the cross arrived. Schmoll stepped up to take the penalty kick, and finished his first goal of the season into the bottom left corner.
Harvard hosts New Hampshire on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Jordan Field in a brief break from Ivy action. The contest will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
