Freeman tallied his third game-winning goal of the season (Penny Ashford).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its first home contest in
nearly a month, Harvard men's soccer took down New Hampshire, 1-0, on
Tuesday night at Jordan Field.
Jake Freeman
provided the game-winning goal for Harvard (3-4-2), his team-leading
fourth of the season. The Crimson tallied nine shots in the bout, five
of which were on target. Evan Mendez recorded his second shutout of the season, making four saves in front of net.
The Crimson forced Wildcat goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter into a pair of early saves, as Freeman and Matt Sheeleigh
both fired attempts on frame. Later in the period, a New Hampshire
(7-1-2) foul resulted in a penalty kick for Harvard, but the ensuing
strike went off the right post.
In the 25th minute, the Wildcats had their best chances on goal, but Mendez made back-to-back saves to maintain the 0-0 score.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Crimson earned a free kick near midfield that led to the Harvard goal. Christian Sady played a pass to Sam Brown
on the wing, who curled in a cross that wound up at Freeman's feet. The
senior released a left-footed shot that went straight into the side
netting to give Harvard a 1-0 lead.
New Hampshire took four shots over the final 15 minutes in search of
the equalizer, but the Harvard defense weathered every attack to earn
the shutout.
Harvard men's soccer travels to Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a
4:30 p.m. kickoff. Its second Ivy League game of the year will be
broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
