BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT men's cross country team,
ranked No. 13 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, finished ninth overall and
second among Division III programs at the New England Intercollegiate
Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championship at Franklin Park on
Saturday afternoon.
The NEICAAA Championship annually features Division I, II, and III
programs from across the country, providing tough competition for each
team that enters the race. Boston University, ranked No. 13 in the
Division I New England regional poll claimed first place, while top
finishing Division III program No. 4 Amherst College took second
overall. The Engineers finished ninth overall and second among Division
III teams at this year's race, for the second consecutive season.
MIT freshmen duo Dennis Maloney (New Albany, Ohio) and Daniel Weiss (Naperville, Ill.) shined for the Engineers on Saturday morning. Maloney finished first for the Cardinal and Gray and 29th overall with a time of 25:23.34, while Weiss crossed the finish line right behind him, 38th
overall, at 25:28.93. Maloney improved upon his time from last
weekend's Purple Valley Classic by 54.77 seconds, while Weiss also
bested his time from a week ago by 49.36 seconds.
Sophomores Colin Godwin (Cary, N.C.) and Benjamin Freed (Frederick, Md.) raced to third and fourth, respectively, for MIT. Godwin clocked in 56th overall with a time of 25:38.83, taking nearly 90 seconds off from last weekend's race, while Freed crossed the stripe 70th at 25:47.07. Classmate Alex Knoedler (Canon City, Colo.) rounded out the top-five times for the Engineers with a 99th
place finish at 26:03.51. In the field of 252 runners, the men's team
placed five of its six runners in the top 100 finishers among elite
teams from across New England.
The Engineers race again next weekend at the Connecticut College
Invitational held at Harkenss Park in Waterford, Conn., with a start
time expected for 11:00 a.m.
