VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Wuilito Fernandes
(Praia, Cape Verde) scored his third game-winning goal of the season in
the 79th minute, to lead the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-5-0,
1-1-0) to a 1-0 victory against Binghamton (6-5-1, 1-1-0), Saturday
night.
"I'm very pleased with the performance our guys put together tonight," said Head Coach Christian Figueroa.
"Binghamton is a tough team to play against on the road, so we knew it
would take a lot of focus to come out with a result. Our back line was
outstanding tonight, and Austin's save to keep the score even in the
second half was just as important as Wuilito's goal."
Jay Marchand
(North Andover, Mass.) sent a through ball from midfield, with
Fernandes gaining
control at the 25-yard line. The junior used great
footwork to maintain the ball through the box to send the ball through
the legs of one defender and side-step goalkeeper Robert Meowes along
the end line to tap the ball into the open net.
Moments before the game-winning tally, Austin Kroll
(Baltimore, Md.) made the key save of the game, diving to his right to
stop a low shot off the foot of Pascal Trappe. The rebound was loose in
the box, but got forced out of bounds wide of the right post.
Both
teams struggled to produce challenging opportunities, with Binghamton
holding a 10-6 advantage in shots. Trappe had a game-high six shots,
with two on goal. Marchand and Fernandes each had two shots with one on
goal.
Kroll made five saves, three in the second half, to
register his fifth shutout of season, and 10th of his career to creep
closer to third all-time.The River Hawks return to Cushing Field on
October 14, as they host Stony Brook at 7 p.m. for UMass Lowell's
America East You Can Play game.
