Man Medevaced From Container Ship In Gulf of Mexico Video

Coast Guard medevacs 1 from container ship in Gulf of Mexico

NEW ORLEANS — A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a crewman aboard a container ship approximately 90 miles south of Southwest Pass in the Gulf of Mexico, Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 9:55 a.m. that a Filipino crewman aboard the Antigua-flagged 434-foot Seaboard Pride was experiencing symptoms of acute appendicitis.

Sector New Orleans directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to the scene. The aircrew arrived on scene at 2:56 p.m., hoisted the crewman abaord and transported him to Air Station New Orleans. Emergency Medical Services personnel took him to West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero.

"This was a very challenging hoist; we ended up hoisting him from the top of the wheelhouse," said Lt. Chris Presnell, Air Station New Orleans pilot. "We were able to get him immediate medical attention due to a combination of superior vigilance and standardized training."

The crewman's condition is unknown.
