Amherst Continues to Roll, Downs Westfield State, 3-0



AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College volleyball team posted its largest point differential of the season in a 3-0 sweep of Westfield State University Tuesday evening, with the Mammoths powering to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-11 victory over the Owls at LeFrak Gymnasium.



With the win, Amherst improves to 8-1 on the

season, while Westfield State falls to 3-14 overall. Amherst returns to the court on Friday, October 8 when they travel to Connecticut College for a 7:00PM conference bout.



SET NOTES

  • A 7-0 run highlighted by kills from Jamie Dailey '22 and Sophie Launsbach '22 and a Sierra Cox '22 service ace, put the home team ahead, 8-2, before the sides traded points to reach the 20-10 mark. The Mammoths closed out the set one win with five uncontested tallies, with four points coming via kills to wrap up the 25-10 victory.
  • The start of the second set was evenly contested until the midway point where Amherst, owning a 9-5 edge, went on a 10-1 barrage to set the score at 19-7 before Katelyn Hamasaki '24 notched the final point of the set, 25-11.
  • The Mammoths earned another 25-11 victory in the third and final set to cap off the 3-0 sweep. Jumping out to an 8-0 lead, Amherst never looked back as they finished off the non-conference, midweek win over the Owls. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With 13 kills and 10 kills, Daily and Launsbach led the match in the category, respectively, while Launsbach's two blocks were also a contest-high. Junior Jacqueline Kortekaas' 25 assists led all players, while first-year Lizzie Papalia had an Amherst-high 15 digs.
  • Notching a team attack percentage of .380, Amherst dominated the matchup in kills (46-20), assists (44-17), digs (62-38) and aces (6-0).
  • Bridgette McAndrews paced the Owls in kills with six, while Julia Dangel-Garcia (17) and Jess Haradon (19) logged Westfield State highs in assists and digs, respectively.
