WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Concluding its season-opening tournament with a game that came down to the wire, Harvard baseball was topped by Towson, 6-5, on Sunday at Couch Ballpark.
The Crimson (2-2) offense was sparked by freshman Patrick McColl and sophomore John Fallon, who each drove home a pair of runs for the second time in the series. Sophomore Matt Rothenberg, meanwhile, tallied a season-best two hits.
Freshman Kevin Stone registered his first-career start for the Crimson, allowing five earned runs over four innings with three strikeouts. Sophomore Dylan Combs, freshman Simon Rosenblum-Larson and senior Sean O'Neill combined for a scoreless five innings to close out the contest.
Towson (2-7) got on the board first with a two-run single from Brady Policelli in the top of the second, but the Crimson quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. McColl tied the game with a two RBI single through the right side to plate freshman John MacLean and junior Josh Ellis, and Fallon immediately followed with a two-run double to score freshman Ben Skinner and McColl.
The Tigers tied the score in the third, 4-4, but junior Drew Reid's RBI double into the gap in left center helped Harvard regain the lead, 5-4. Rothenberg crossed home on the play.
Towson took control in the top of the fifth with a pair of scores off the bats of Cuinn Mullins and Richie Palacios to go ahead, 6-5, and held on late for the victory.
Harvard returns to the field March 11-13 for a three-game set at No. 1 Florida. All three contests will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
