Women’s Tennis Falls In Little East Conference Match

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Despite picking-up an 8-6 win at second doubles, the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth defeated women's tennis by the final of 8-1 Thursday afternoon at the UMD Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) and Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) earned the lone point for the Beacons as they look set a new program mark for conference wins in a season with four. 

The duo defeated their UMD rivals by the final of 8-6 to keep the match even at 1-1.

The Corsairs would go into singles play with a 2-1 lead.  At first singles, Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) battled back-and-forth with the Corsairs Jenna Lahaie, as the two went to a tiebreaker.  Lahaie would win the first set 7-6 (8-6), but Garica would take the second 6-3.  In the third, Lahaie earned a 10-2 victory to defeat Garcia.

Shea would also play a very close match as she dropped a 7-6 (8-6) decision in the first set, before falling to Samantha Rollings in the second by the final of 6-2.

  • UMass Boston sits just one conference win away from setting the program record for wins in a season.
  • All-time the Beacons are 1-13 when facing the Corsairs, with the lone win coming in 2001
  • With their win at second doubles Shea and Woytowicz improved to 4-5 on the year

The Beacons will travel to Bridgewater State University on Saturday for a 12 p.m. conference match.
