SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Simmons College field
hockey team was defeated by host Mount Holyoke College, 1-0, this
evening at MHC Turf Field in South Hadley, Mass. The Sharks fall to 9-4
on the season, while the Lyons improve to 6-5.
Mount Holyoke outshot Simmons, 13-4, and held a 12-4 advantage on
penalty corners with seven of those coming in the final five minutes of
play.
The Lyons tallied the only goal of the night in just the fourth
minute of play. Sophomore midfielder Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.)
carried the ball into the offensive zone and sent a hard shot into the
circle. Junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) was there
for a one-timer that sailed past the keeper into the left corner for her
team-high 11th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead at 3:33 of the opening half.
The Sharks looked to knot the game early in the second half when sophomore forward Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.)
directed a shot on goal off a penalty corner, but the attempt was
turned away by the Mount Holyoke keeper just 2:37 into the period.
Despite having seven penalty corners in the final minutes of the
match, the Lyons could only manage one shot as the Simmons defense
buckled down.
Junior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.)
made six saves for the Sharks, while junior keeper Liz DiCesare
(Westford, Mass.) stopped both shots she faced to record her eighth
career shutout for Mount Holyoke.
Simmons will be off for almost 10 days and returns to action on
Saturday, October 17 when it hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference
foe Anna Maria College on Winsor Field at 4:00 p.m., while the Lyons
travel to Springfield, Mass. on October 10 for a 4:00 p.m. contest with
Springfield College.
