Minutewomen Pick Up 3-2 Decision Over Billikens

Anne Dijkstra scored one of the three UMass goals Saint Louis.
FENTON, Mo. - University of Massachusetts field hockey scored three straight tallies before the defense fought off a late Saint Louis charge as the Minutewomen escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Billikens at Scott Gallagher Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri, Friday afternoon. Anne Dijkstra, Sarah Hawkshaw and Nicole Miller scored once a piece in the win.

Hawkshaw also provided one assist while Rachael Burchell and Grace Horgan helped out on a UMass goal each. Sam Carlino made six saves in net for the victory, her 50th at UMass. She is 50-27 as the starting goalkeeper with all but one decision since she joined the team as a freshman ahead of the 2012 campaign.

Massachusetts (6-4, 2-1 Atlantic 10) broke the scoreless tie at the seven-minute, 57-second mark when Dijkstra converted on a feed from Hawkshaw for the 1-0 Maroon and White lead. It marked the first goal of the Huizen, The Netherlands, native's collegiate career.

The Maroon and White converted twice more before Saint Louis lit up the scoreboard. Burchell sent in a pass to Miller for the second UMass tally, recorded in the 46th minute of play. With the goal, Miller reached five on the season for the second consecutive year while Burchell's assist went as her first point with the Minutewomen.

Hawkshaw added the third Maroon and White tally at the 58:11 mark. Horgan provided the assist -- also her first college point -- as she found Hawkshaw in an attacking spot with an open net at the right side of the cage.

The three-goal lead dipped back to one after Saint Louis notched back-to-back goals in the 63rd minute. Molly Feid notched the first for the Billikens at 62:16 before Erica Bondoc scored only 39 seconds later.

Carlino fought off one last Saint Louis (0-12, 0-4 Atlantic 10) charge with back-to-back saves. She blocked a shot by Feid with four minutes, 15 seconds to play and the score at 3-2 before turning aside Kristin Collins 26 seconds later.

Massachusetts doubled Saint Louis in shots, 22-11 and penalty corners, 4-2. Tory Westhead suffered the loss in net for the Billikens with eight saves made.

The Minutewomen travel to No. 9 Louisville for the completion of their Midwestern weekend. UMass faces the Cardinals at the Marshall Center in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
