BABSON PARK, Massachusetts — Despite opening the match with a victory in
doubles play, Wellesley College tennis dropped a 7-2 decision to host
Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference
(NEWMAC) action on Saturday at Farewell courts.
Babson improves to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Wellesley drops to 5-3 overall (4-2 NEWMAC).
In singles play, sophomore Emily Olson
(La Jolla, Calif.) was the only Wellesley player to earn a win,
defeating Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.), 6-4, 6-1, at #4 Singles.
After dropping the #1 and #3 doubles matches, the Blue countered at #2, as juniors Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) defeated Paolino and junior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.), 9-7.
Babson sophomores Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and Jenny Quenard
(St.-Legier, Switzerland) earned the victory at #1 doubles, defeating
Olson and first year Justine Huang
(Coto de Caza, Calif.), 8-3. Both Babson players went on to score
victories in singles play, as Akgul defeated Stojkovic (6-0, 6-4) at #1
Singles and Quenard topped Chen (7-5, 6-2) at #3 Singles.
Babson first-years Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) and Chloe
Brandt (Denver, Colo) secured the Babson victory at #3 Doubles with an
8-6 victory over first years Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) and Rosanne Hu
(Troy, Texas). Each added singles victories, with Gianelos earning a
7-5, 6-2 win over Huang at #2 and Brandt posting a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2
victory over first year So Jin Ki (Seoul, South Korea) at #6.
Weick also added a singles victory for Babson, defeating Lorich (New
York, N.Y.) 6-4, 6-1 at #5 Singles to seal the 7-2 win for the Beavers.
Both teams continue NEWMAC action on Tuesday, October 5, with
Wellesley set to host Emerson at 5:00 PM, while Babson hosts Wheaton at
3:30 PM.
